Hi From A Newbie....and a Question Hi everyone. I am a brand new yorkie owner and new to the forum. I have an 8 week old parti yorkie named Diesel and I am in love with him. When we brought him home he was very playful but a week later and he doesn't ever really want to play. It is as if our puppy turned into an adult overnight. Is this something to be concerned about or could it just be that he is still adjusting to his new home? Any thoughts appreciated. <img src="http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smilie" smilieid="1" class="inlineimg" /> |
Hello and congrats on your new baby. Diesel is awfully young to be away from his mother. Is he acting lethargic? If so, he could be experiencing hypoglycemia. Try giving him karo syrup or a better option, Nutrical. He needs to have food and water available at all times at this age. |
Agreed....hope he's ok |
Welcome to YT. Hope your little guy is ok today. Puppies need lots of rest at that age. They will play and sleep play and sleep. If he overplays it can cause his sugar to drop fast so just keep a close eye on him and like the others said nutrical handy. Also the vet on speed dial at that age is very important. Congratulations on your little guy. |
Hi and WELCOME to YT :)! Yes, you should absolutely be concerned if your formerly playful pup suddenly changes and his behavior is very quiet. At this extremely young age, it means you need to get him to the vet ASAP bc you don't know what you *could* be dealing with. If his appetite is down, that makes it a true emergency. When pups are this young and something goes wrong, they can go down very, very rapidly. Please let us know how this pup is doing! |
Welcome to YT!!! Other members have already offered great advice. You are right to ask about this as when they are this young it's important to stay on top of things as you probably already know. We brought our Princess Sophie home at 8 weeks because we were not happy with some things the breeder was doing and she had a bout of hypoglycemia on the way home. Now I watch her like a hawk but she is just like others have described. She eats, does her business, plays and sleeps...not always in that order. I do know a routine for these pups is really good for them and for you. I would go ahead and give the Kyro syrup or nutrical right away if you have it on hand and see if your little one gets more energy. If that doesn't help, I would head to the vet's immediately. It never hurts to be vigilant. Good luck with your new pup and again welcome!!! Please let us know what happens. Blessings! |

I hope he's okay, these little ones can go downhill so fast. Please do an update. |
Thanks everyone. Diesel is doing good. We have been putting karo syrup in his water daily and at night. Saturday he got pretty lethargic so we rubbed some karo on his gums and he perked right up. I leave food for him during the day too. I had tried changing his food but have just gone back to the puppy chow the breeder had him on for now. Now if I could just figure out the potty training thing. Again thanks for the advice......I really appreciate it!!:) |
I"m so glad the karo is helping. Just make sure he's getting high protien to follow it up or he'll just crash again in a few hours. Something I always have on hand is Nutrical..karo is good in a pinch, but I think Nutrical is best to give even as a preventative type treat. Just stay patient and consistent with the potty training. As most will attest, Yorkies can be quite difficult to get completely trustworthy. Everytime I think Mandie is good..she fools me and she's 10 months old lol Hang in there :) |
Hello and welcome to YT. I am glad he is doing better. Nutrical is better then Karo. You can even buy it on amazon. |
Welcome! Im glad that the Karo is helping and making sure that he eats real often. He is a baby and the potty thing will take time. Even at 14 or 16 weeks they are still very young so your baby is still tiny and infant like. Lots of patience for him and it will happen. Remember to reward with praise and treats when he does go potty in the right place. |
I was worried hypoglycemia when my pup was little. Got him at 9 weeks. I boiled chicken and made sure he got about a teaspoon every few hours besides free feeding puppy kibble. I also mixed some wet food in with his kibble to make it more appetizing. By doing this, I did not have any problems. |
Welcome to YT and glad your lil fellow is doing better! |
Welcome! Others gave you great advice!. |
