I called vet back and the doc will be back in an hour.....they said I could call back then or bring him back to the office. He just looks like he is losing weight by the minute. :( you guys have experience..... Should he be doing some better by now?

Please let up know how the vet visit went. I pray your little guy will feel better soon. May God give you and Diesel strength!

So wanted to give an update....took him to the emergency animal hospital last night and they got to the root of the problem. He has coccidimia. They gave him some sub q fluids with vitamins and a dose of antibiotic to be followed by a second dose next Monday. The challenge now is getting him to eat and drink. He is drinking good on his own but so far today I am having to puree his canned food and give it to him in a syringe. Worry about tomorrow when I need to go back to work. Might try boiling him some chicken and rice later. Anyone have experience with coccimidia? The good news is that he hasnt lost weight.

barkleylove 03-05-2013 05:53 AM

I'm not familiar with coccimidia or you mean coccidia? If so I'm surprised it wasn't picked up when your vet did a fecal test. I know it can be brought on by stress and is normally treated with a 10 day dose of Albon. Some breeders treat them for it even if they haven't tested positive just to be on the safe side. I hope this course of treatment does the trick and he is all better very soon, poor little guy. Please keep us posted.

Tiffanybrooke 03-05-2013 06:01 AM

Yes sorry I did mean coccidia. The regular vet didnt do a fecal test. Needless to say I have now chosen a new regular vet and we are going there today so they can give him some more fluids.

gracielove 03-05-2013 06:20 AM

I'm glad you got your puppy to the vet. When a puppy has continued hypoglycemic episodes it usually indicates there may be an underlying problem. Hopefully cocicdia is the only other issue. Also continued lack of appetite can bring on dehydration, so I'm sure he was in need of the hydration they gave him.

I hope you can get him on a good nutritious diet soon.

LilAnnCamp 03-05-2013 06:16 PM

Just so you know Coccidia doesn't always show up in a fecal. A dog has to have a bad case of it or the eggs must shedding at that moment for the vet to see them. It can drag a pup down. I hope, he is feeling better!

Verbena 03-05-2013 07:26 PM

I am glad to hear they figured out what was wrong and gave him meds to help him. I hope he eats better soon

Tiffanybrooke 03-09-2013 09:08 AM

Wanted to post an update on my little guy. Turns out not only did he have coccidia and roundworms, he also tested positive for giardia!!!! It all totally attacked his red blood cells and his RBC level was down to 10 yesterday (normal is 30 something). He had a blood transfusion yesterday and this morning thank goodness his level was up from 20 after the transfusion to 22. Has been a very long upsetting weak. I had no idea these illnesses even existed. Hoping his levels continue to rise. He is doing great today!!!

Cherie6446 03-09-2013 09:35 AM

I'm so sorry that you and your little guy are having go through this. It makes me so angry that breeders sell pups too early and don't give a second thought to the health of theses babies. I pray that all will be good for both of you very soon. Have you spoken with the breeder about all of this?

Amazing Yorkies 03-09-2013 09:44 AM

You did have a tough week! Glad he is doing better!
Thanks for the update!

Teresiana 03-09-2013 10:03 AM

Poor little Diesel! At least they finally got to the root of the problem. It sounds like he's on the way to recovery. Is he eating now? Just a suggestion...I know your breeder suggested that you feed him Little Ceasar's, but you may want to look into a better quality food for him...especially since he's been so ill. If he's eating canned, Blue Buffalo is a good canned food & it's available at Petco/Petsmart. Blue Buffalo is just one example of a better quality food. There are a lot of brands out there. Here's a link to a website with some information about puppy food: Best Puppy Foods

Good luck! I hope your little baby continues to get stronger & healthier! His pictures are absolutely adorable! He is such a cutie! No wonder you're in love :heart to

Tiffanybrooke 03-09-2013 11:21 AM

Yes he is eating pretty good now on his own. He is getting back to the puppy we had when we first brought him home. I did tell the breeder and was very nice about it. I told her that I just wanted her to know so that she could get her dogs checked and any of the other pups got sick she could tell their owners to get a fecal test ASAP. She was very offended and defensive. Claims the vet tested the pups for coccidosis during their vet check and it was negative. Tried to tell me it can be caused from stress. I explained that stress could make it develop but he had to get the parasite somewhere first and we haven't had him outside nor around other animals. She still said he would have had to gotten it after he left her house, which the vet says is impossible, especially since he has the roundworms that would have come from his mother. This is my first dog and I did nor know the right questions to ask about what the vet tested him for. Also, thanks for the advice on the food. I actually have a can of blue buffalo in the fridge. I tried to gradually switch his food when we brought him home. Tried nutri source and he didn't seem to like that so I tried wellness puppy blend. But after he started getting sick I decided to not worry about switching him right now. I just wanted him to eat. Once he is all recovered and settled in good here I definitely want to make the switch to a better quality food. Thanks for the comments on his pic......everyone at the vets office keeps wanting to take him home :)

Teresiana 03-09-2013 11:43 AM

Well, you seem pretty smart considering Diesel is your first pup. I think you said all the right things to your breeder. I'm not surprised that she was offended/defensive...whatever. But good for you! I had to have a similar conversation with the "rescue" I got my Momo from. And she wasn't even my first dog. We all live & learn ;) I'm so glad that little Diesel is getting back to being a happy puppy!! And glad that you can finally relax after what seems like a really tough week. Good call on the food switch. You're absolutely right...get him over the hurdle before you start throwing new food in the mix. Now go enjoy your weekend with that adorable little baby of yours :)

Tiffanybrooke 03-09-2013 11:50 AM

Thanks!!! We are doing a lot of snuggling!!:)

Cherie6446 03-09-2013 02:33 PM

It does not surprise me about the response from the breeder. You could consider small claims court especially with the report from the vet. I am sure you incurred many vet bills and she should be responsible for some if not all.

chestermama 03-09-2013 04:05 PM

Im glad he is doing better

southernbelle04 03-09-2013 04:07 PM

Just wanted to welcome you and Diesel to YT! Glad your baby is feeling better!

Patti 03-09-2013 06:01 PM

I am so glad Diesel is doing better. You are a great Mom.

Jacksmom052709 03-09-2013 06:20 PM

Thank you for the update - Diesel is sure a cutie! I cannot believe it took so long for the vet to diagnose him, just very glad that you took him to another vet who didn't stop searching until he/she found what was making him sick. I hope he continues to get better, sounds like he is already on his way to recovering.

gracielove 03-09-2013 06:39 PM

You did the right thing for your little guy. Just think of the other pups that may not have been so lucky! That breeder is the pits. I'm sure she does not want you telling anyone how parasite ridden her dogs are. It's a good thing you did not depend on her advice to save your little guy. She told you to feed him one of the worst brands on the market and never even advised a vet visit! I hope things go well for you and your puppy from here on out!

nanahas3 03-09-2013 11:53 PM

So glad to hear your little guy is doing so much better. They steal your heart so quickly. Praying for continued health for little Diesel. Kyra had coccidea when we first brought her home but her breeder was very understanding and happy we called her so she could treat her other pups. I hate when a breeder doesn't even try to be understanding, they should be concerned about one of their pups also.

Tiffanybrooke 03-11-2013 09:50 AM

Yeah the response from the breeder was pretty disappointing. I really trusted her. Shame on me I guess. Also, looking back on it now, the paper she gave me saying that Diesel had passed his vet check is basically worthless. It makes me mad at myself really that I accepted it. It is something she typed up that just has a line for the vet to sign but he just wrote his name in there. Anyone could have done that. It did not list what specific tests were done either. It just said that he was in good health and any health problem to develop after I took him home would be my responsibility. I should have asked for a specific list and I should have insisted that the form be notarized. Anyway, the vet that I found has been totally awesome and this morning my little guy's PCV level was up from 20 on Friday and 22 on Saturday to 23 today! He is finally playing and eating the way a puppy should! Thanks again you guys!!! :)

Melany 03-11-2013 09:57 AM

Wow, you have really had a rough welcoming into the world of Yorkiedom, I am so glad to hear that Diesel is doing well now. Just remember the wheel turns. So what goes around comes around. Hugs to Diesel

A real health certificate would have had an official letterhead on it. Did you have your little guy shipped to you? Did you ever see the place he came from? Some nasty people can hide behind internet and classified ads.

I know you love your little guy but that greeder owes you your money back. She misrepresented what she was selling you. Even if it was an accidental breeding it was still misrepresentation. The AKC will drop her if they find out she is doing this. If it's not AKC then there is not much you can do officially except make sure others find out what she is doing. Small claims court might be helpful if the greeder is near you.

Teresiana 03-11-2013 11:28 AM

Glad to hear that Diesel is making a comeback :) Don't beat yourself up over the breeder thing. Those nasty "greeders" have a lot of experience ripping people off...that's how they make money after all. They design their paperwork & "business" procedures to be confusing for their next victim. At least now you KNOW what red flags to look for & you can spread the word to your friends who may be looking to purchase a puppy in the future. You can even file a complaint if it will make you feel better. Just be thankful that you have an adorable, healthy puppy. You're a great Mommy :)

When we brought him home he was very playful but a week later and he doesn't ever really want to play. It is as if our puppy turned into an adult overnight. Is this something to be concerned about or could it just be that he is still adjusting to his new home? Any thoughts appreciated. <img src="http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Smilie" smilieid="1" class="inlineimg" />

Wonderful to know he is doing better.. Love to Diesel from Fancy in Albany, Ga. I know what it is like to be sick. I have Cushins disease, hypothryoidism, seizures & I have an eye that does not produce any tears... Hang in there!!!

gracielove 03-14-2013 03:17 AM

How is his energy level now? Is he playing as he should? It is so stressful on these little puppies to go to a new home at such a young age and have to deal with parasites as well. I hope he has fully recovered.

bobohyde 03-14-2013 03:41 AM

Diesel is very lucky to have you as his mom. Glad to hear he is doing better.
