What to expect because we are expecting??
 

First litter I need all the info I can get. She's due in a couple weeks. Please help :animal36

Be sure you have a quiet, dark safe place out of the way of foot traffic for mamma to whelp. Youll need some kind of whelping box for her and the pups to be for at least 10-12 weeks.

Visit garage sales, second hand stores and your local good will stores to get baby blankets, rugs, towels or anything that is washable and can be used for bedding. You'll go through a lot. Start saving news papers you also need lots of those. Look on the site I gave you for your whelping supplies. You never know when you may need to give mamma a hand if whelping gets drawn out. She may tire easily during birthing and cleaning the pups.

It's important that she be eating puppy food for calcium intake and milk production. Try getting the same brand that she eats now. MIx a scoop of dry puppy food with canned puppy and some water. She should be eating 4-5 small meals a day up to and until the pups are weaned.

Start putting money back in case she needs to have an emergency c-sec. Have your vets number and the emerg vets number on hand. If possible get her x-rayed to verify the number of pups she is having.

I ordered a puppy play pen that is small and is washable that I she might use. But I'm scared she's going to want to have them in my bed. Cause that where she sleep right beside me. And another ? I have to male that are also in the house they won't bother them will they?

PLEASE, schedule an appointment NOW to have your momma xrayed on day 58 so you will know exactly what you are dealing with. That prevents a lot of anxious waiting, and guessing and wondering....by then, you will be able to see if the puppies are going to fit thru the dams pelvic ring or if she is going to need a c-section. Ask your vet to measure heads to see if they are going to fit with no problems. If you see that she is carrying babies that are already a very close fit or already too large at day 58, they are only going to grow more in another 5-8 days, so go ahead and schedule her for a c-section on her due date.....no sense sitting around with no experience, on your first litter, hoping and praying she may somehow miraculously manage to push square pegs thru a round hole and have these pups with no problems. It could very easily cost you the dams life, along with some or all of the puppies.

She has already been and will go back next week for the ultra sound. The vet only feels two hopefully we won't have any problems

Did he do an xray?....or is he going to go strictly by US? Majority of vets can read an xray....US need some experience.

Those babies can hide in ultrasounds!!! Can't really hide in X-rays! Make sure to have her xrayed! :) might also post in the breeder section! Good luck!

Welcome to YT. Please check out the Breeder Section. I think you have already gotten some good advice, the same as I would have suggested. Do you have a breeder that will come and help with the birth ? It is always better to have some there to help. I hope your Yorkie delivers safely and all pups are healthy. Please keep us updated.

No I sure don't but my vet is on stand by but she's 45 min away. I love this forum thanks everybody for the help.

You need to get the whelping area set up and start encouraging her to sleep there. She should start nesting and get use to it hopefully with not problem. As far as your male, it is possible that they will not like the pups and want to do harm to them. My male who sired four of our litters was great with the first three litters but than had issues with the fourth. You want to take precaution so that your male does not have access to the litter. PLus if you have females in the house you may have issue there as well. Its best to just keep all other dogs away from the litter. You just never know what could happen, so its best to take action to prevent it at all.

When she goes into labor she is going to be nervous. She will want you by her side. Most most mothers will not stay in a whelping box unless you stay there with them through the process. Make sure you have the time to spend with her when she is due to have them. Sit there with her and tell her what a great job she is doing. Don't wait if things do not proceed as they should.

Get comfortable because you are going to be eating and sleeping in the whelping box with momma until she is finished....she wont stay in there by herself, and you have to coach her thru it all.

If you can get your hands on one of these, they work great for whelping and for about the first two weeks. Both mom and pups stayed in it for the first 2 & half weeks.

Its called Modular Storage, its used in garages.
