When I took Princess Sophie for her very first pet check up, the vet had me bring a stool sample to check for heart worms. She was only 8 weeks old at the time. The test came back negative so we started her on Heartgard right away. We take our dogs lots of places and so I would be very afraid to not have them on this preventative. |

I was just giving my personal experience with dealing with my dog and her heart worms. I am assuming they do the injections at shelters because they need fast results. As to medication, we could only use heart guard and gave it more frequently. We still can only give her heart guard to be on the safe side. My other dog gets sentinel. My yorkie also uses heart guard. |
Problems with Heartworm Meds Oakley is getting the last of his puppy shots this Saturday along with his monthly heartworm medicine. I noticed that when I give him the meds the next morning, after his shot, later that night he threw up. Once before he threw up and I put two and two together thinking it was the heartworm medication and sure enough, the first time was after he had his medicine. Have any of you had problems with your pups/dogs with this? He's taken the Heartgard brand. |

No I haven't but I will look into that this weekend as he's getting the last of his puppy shots and I'll most definitely look into that. Thanks! |
Heartworm is anywhere and everywhere where mosquitoes are present. The biggest con of not treating against Heartworm is "death". The pro is that your pup will be treated against it. Believe me when I say it is one of the hardest things in the world to have to deal with knowing that your dog died of Heartworm when it could have been prevented. I lost my Shadow to Heartworm almost 11 yrs ago. Heartworm was faily new to our area and we chose not to have him treated. Plus were young, money was tight and I didn't know the consequence would be the loss of my dog. We made the wrong decision and I regret it to this day. It was our job to protect him and we failed. I will never make that mistake again. We already had Quincy at that time and I left the vet office after having Shadow put to sleep with the Hearworm medication for Quincy in hand. |
In my mind heartworms are nothing to play with. You treat year round and get a yearly test in my opinion. The treatment can make a small dog very sick or even kill them and that is way to risky for me. |
Since Oakley is vomiting up his heartworm medicine and has the last three months, he had a visit with the vet this morning. The vet checked him out along with the stool sample and got a clean bill of health. The vet gave him a trial of Heartgard (that is one we had a problem with along with 1 month dose of Iverhart) and suggested we give him 1/3 of the pill day one, a 1/3 the second and so on. He said to mix it with his dry food and a little wet food. I've got my fingers crossed Oakley will be able to handle it. I was anxious to get his weight and am happy to report he's now 4.7 lbs (he'll be 5 mos. on the 18th). |
Veterinarians concerned about increased heartworm cases in Ventura County » Ventura County Star Mobile Dogs in CA should be on prevention. The fast kill method is painful. The slow kill method is not. However, side effects from either method can cause pain and suffering. Standard of care is Immiticide therapy (fast kill). Slow kill looks good on paper but really read up on it of going this way. Heartworm experts do not recommend it. |
Our lovely beagle, Rufus, contracted heartworms and the entire ordeal was devastating. The treatment (fast kill) was expensive and painful. My husband was taking pictures of Rufus (4 years old at the time) after the treatment was completed and the poor boy's face fur had turned completely white!! I would say the treatment "aged" him, if that makes sense...My vet explained the treatment is basically doses of poison to kill the heartworms. Mosquitos are everywhere....why take the chance...give the monthly preventative. The alternative is not pretty. |
I give Heartguard year-round. I am very minimal in regards to vaccinations, and everything, but heartworms is something I don't mess with. I just don't even want to take the chance. And the proper medication is so safe so it doesn't worry me. |

I have given Huey heartworm meds since we got him. We live Iin Ga where mosquitoes are plentiful. Our vet also recommends annual testing even if he hasnt missed a dose, but I do have the option to decline the test if I know I havent missed a dose. We use Trifexis, which is a combination of Sentinal heartworm med plus comfortis flea med. He hasn't has any problems with this at all. |
