Any Advice would be appreciated So I recently became a new mommy to a Beautiful Yorkie. We got her at 8 weeks which I heard from most people that 8wks is too young for a Yorkie to be removed from her mom. Anyways since we've had her we have had several episodes with her . I've come to the conclusion that my baby girl is a picky DIVA! The next issue is she has a very sensitive stomach. After two days of her being home we had to rush her in because of Vomiting and Diarrhea my first thought was PARVO oh my heart sank to my stomach, but luckily she was cleared from Parvo and parasites. So finally I explained to the doctor that she wasn't really eating... I was feeding her Blue Buffalo but she wouldn't eat it unless I sat with her and hand fed her. Well recently we went through the same episode and we decided to hold out a bit so we gave her canned food that the Vet prescribed for her the last time we visited and hoped that it would work ( being that the last time she saw the vet was a week ago) The next day we switch her from the canned food to Science Diet which a dog food the vet also gave us and decided to hold off on the Blue Buffalo to see how she would take it. Well it was a hit I have never seen my Yorkie eat as much as she ate with the Science Diet. We now have to remove the tray because she wants to eat all the time. So my thing is I've done my research with Science Diet but I see not many people are a fan of the food. So should I just leave her with the Science Diet being that shes enjoying that food so much better or should I continue my search for another type of food? |
Oh boy, you're opening a can of worms asking people's opinion on different brands of dog food....:D She's a puppy...and a young puppy at that. And, you said she's been a picky eater. Right now she needs to eat & grow. If you've found something she'll eat, I'd stick with it. She's young, she's been through the stress of leaving her mom & littermates, and moving in a new place with new people. Once she has been settled in your home for a while and she's grown more and is a few months older, if you want to gradually change over to a different food, you could try to do so then....but I wouldn't add more change to her life right now. |
WELCOME! So glad the problem was not parvovirus or something like that. I've had two Yorkies, but others here have had more experience - but.....if your baby is eating well now and not having tummy or diarrhea problems I would tend to stick with what the vet recommends. Your pup is young and diarrhea and vomiting could cause dangerous MAJOR dehydration that is fatal to those young ones and can happen very fast! Later when she is more mature you could then decide what food you prefer. Many read DOG FOOD ADVISOR on the Internet. But again, you pup is so young and I would stick with the vet for now. I'm sure others will weigh in and give their take on this issue. Again, WELCOME to you and your DIVA:D We love pictures! |
Welcome to YT! Yes, what the others have said. Right now your baby just needs to eat and if it is Science Diet, then so be it. I would wait probably a few months and then possibly try something better. |

Hi and welcome to you and your tiny baby. Well, as long as she is eating, then let her. Sometimes though they eat like that with new food, then after a few days, they stop. If she does stop, I wouldn't start her on a different kibble. I would add some type of flavor to the science diet, like maybe baby food meat and a little beef broth. |
Thanks everybody after reading everybody replies I don't feel like a bad mother for leaving her on Science Diet for a while. I will leave her on it for a couple months ... From there I will start looking for another brand that's healthy and she can tolerate. I just added a picture to my profile. She's a stinker with pictures... Every time I bring a camera around her she turns around immediately and gives me her back lol pretty comical.. |
Welcome to YT!! I agree with the others it is not wise to switch their food a lot when they are this young. If she likes it I would let her eat it for now. I would also leave kibble for her to free feed because she really won't overeat at that age and needs what she is consuming :). |
The 'diva' thing can ride out for now for the sake of her eating SOMETHING! :D |
Hi and welcome to YT! I agree with the others- for now, feed your baby whatever she will eat. Eventually you can switch her (gradually) to a better food but right now you just need to keep her eating. When the time comes to switch her to a good food you may have to try out a few. Start at the top and work your way down the tiers until you hit on a good food that works for her. You definately want her eating the best you can get for her. Great food really makes a world of difference. |
Welcome to YT. I don't have different advice than what has already been given. |
Welcome and congratulations on your new bundle of joy! |
Welcome! And stick with what she likes! |
