Well it happened. Chewie somehow got out of his pen. All I know is when I left, he was in his pen, and when I came back home an hour and a half later, he was sitting on my couch in the living room. The pen is high - like 36". His crate is in the back corner against the wall. It had to be super difficult for him to "tight rope walk" around the edge enough to get free, but somehow he did it. And now I'm scared he'll do it again. I don't know what to do. :( |
I take a sheet and throw it over the top of the x-pen. pulling it tightly and pinning it securley with safety pins....you have to put some thought into how you pin the sheet over the top, as you do not want him to crawl out over the top, going between where the pins are placed. It takes a little bit of ingenuity to out fox climbers, but it can be done! There are also canvas type tops that you can buy that are specifically made to cover the tops of x-pens....$$$$ and a sheet that is well [inned works just as well! |

I had the same thing happen this week. Toby turned Houdini on me lol. I bought some plastic mesh fencing and some zap straps and have put that as a new roof... Also using carabiners in one corner as we use part of it to block the doorway when we are home |
Oh my goodness......Cooper hasn't done this yet, but I am glad that I read this post because now I know that I need to create a "roof" for his pen. LOL....these little ones certainly do keep us on our toes! |
Milo was 8 weeks old when he did that..I think he came home from the breeders house knowing how to climb, because he climbed out of his pen many times before we understood how he was doing it. We had his pen pushed up against the couch,so heīd climb up the part that was against it and jump down safely to the soft couch, then there was only a little way down to the floor,so thankfully he never hurt himself.I put him in his pen and hid one day,and thatīs how we caught him.You can cover the pen with mesh or even adapt a sheet (I made one with elastic edges to fit right around the top).Once he sees a "roof",heīll stop trying to climb out ;) |
My puppy climbs like a cat and when she is not doing that the older one just opens the pen door for her... So I know have to sheet and zip tie it closed. |
Morgan has not done that yet// hopefully he wont |
After ONE YEAR of being perfectly fine in her Iris xpen my DDs Biewer Eevee suddendly turned into a climber. She bought the mesh top that is made for the xpen and it attaches with little velcro tabs all around the pen. It took about 5 minutes for her to push her way out of that! My fix was to tie small pieces of white yarn all around the mesh top and onto the pen sides. I was very careful to do this tightly and use very short pieces that would pose no "hanging" danger if she was to push through those somehow or if one came untied. True to her never give up nature, she still found a few places she could escape. We tied these up one by one and now - - - fingers crossed - - - I believe she is secure and safe. |
Do all Yorkie's end up climbing?? Princess Sophie hasn't tried this yet but I think she might. I thought about keeping her claws trimmed and the play pen we have has a floor and a zip on roof. I'm hoping this will keep her from climbing but I imagine she may figure something else out. LOL |

Until Amy learned she could jump up on things, she would climb up my husband and my pant legs. It was so cute we couldn't help but laugh at her. Now she can jump nothing is safe in the house. LOL |
Riley never climbed out of his x-pen... He's been so good though that he had full run of the place at about 9-months old. I started with the bedroom and after about 4-weeks he got full run... |
