First Post New Yorkie 'Mom' Hello...glad that I just found this Forum as I am new to the world of Yorkshire Terriers having adopted a 7 1/2 year old little girl two (2) months ago. It turns out that this is her 5th home! My Vet had called me knowing that I was looking to adopt another small dog and told me that a woman had brought her Yorkie in because she could not tale care of her any longer for various reasons. I agreed to 'baby-sit' this little gal over the weekend and bring her back the following Tuesday. Well, all of you Yorkie lovers know what happens when you 'baby-sit' one of these precious fur babies. That quickly I became attached to her and I believe, she to me. Right now, Ginger (that is the name she had been given and at her age, don't think that I should change it) is curled up next to me while I sit in a recliner. She is very affectionate and I am trying to get accustomed to such a small dog and her fondness for licking hands and legs. Do most or all Yorkies do this? I had 20 and 25 pound dogs over the years and a 5 1/2 pound furbaby is so smell to me. I watch where I walk because she is so quiet and pops up behind me but she does back up and I've so far never come close to stepping on her! !lol Anyway just wanted to introduce Ginger and myself to this community and hope to learn so much from you and your experiences with Yorkies. Thank you.:) |

Welcome to you and Ginger to YT. Yes they are little lickers. Mine has been licking my fingers, face and computer all day, every time I stop scratching his head or belly. |

Welcome to Yorkie talk, I'm a newbie too. I purchased a few cat collars for my fur baby because they fit well and they have a bell so you can hear her coming. |
Welcome to you and Ginger. Do you have any pictures of her you could post? Would love to meet her. |

Welcome to yt |
Awww, Ginger stole your heart just like Yorkies are made to do. :) That's so great!! Welcome to YT!! Look forward to getting to know you and Ginger better. Can't wait to see some pics when you get a chance :D |
Welcome to YT and thank you for giving Ginger a loving forever home. Tibbe is a limited licker but some dogs, especially nervous, anxious dogs can lick a bit too much and you can just redirect them to something else with the phrase "uh oh" or say "enough" & toss a toy across the room. I'll bet you are going to love having a lapdog like Ginger. Likely she'll have some behavioral issues due to her many home changes and that is to be expected. You can just work on them as they arise and your little Yorkie will soon settle in very well. I'm so glad that you found each other and she led you to YT! |
Hi and welcome to YT. Buster is another Yorkie who can't hold his licker. :D I get lots of kisses but he loves to lick Jack's arms and feet   I guess he just loves Daddy salt. He will actually put on paw over Jack's arm or leg and hold it down so he can lick him. I know you and Ginger will enrich each others lives. |
Question Can I teach my dog to stop licking ? Yes, we teach our Yorkies licking is only allowed when we ask for kisses. Therapy dogs should not lick unless asked. We give the cue word Enough, after 3 licks. And No if they try to sneak in an extra few licks. |
Hello and a big THANKS to all of you for your replies!!! I am beginning to become accustomed to the licking, somewhat. When Ginger is sitting on my lap she will take a paw and pull my hand towards her...this is done so that I will give her a 'belly rub'. If I stop sooner than she thinks I should have, she will again put her paw on my hand and again pull it towards her. Funny. I get a kick out of this. Yorkies are intelligent and great manipulators I think. Again, thank you. |
