Stressful day Hello yorkie talk world, today I am sad and stressed out. I took my Mr.Milo to the vet for his one year checkup and shots, and she informed me that Milo has patellar luxation, in both of his back legs. She explained the concept to me, and recommends early surgery to fix the problem before he develops arthritis. I am sad for Milo for having to undergo this, but i am also feeling angry that the person i got Milo from never told me that his parents had this. The vet told me it is just something alot of yorkies have and are born with. Has anyone else had to deal with this? I know it is not like emergency life threatening, but it just upsets me. :( |
Luxating Patella His parents may or may not have had it. They can go back a generation or so and pick up genes also. The breeder may not have been aware of the problem in the parents. Do let him/her know about it so that she can stay away from breeding that pair. |
If he is not showing signs of pain I would not get the surgery. If you do get the surgery though you need to have it done by an orthopedic surgeon not your regular vet. I have heard many horror story's of people getting it done by there regular vet. |
at least it is correctable. its understandable you are upset no one wants their baby to have surgery. i wish milo the best of luck when that time comes. and i agree you should let your breeder know just incase. hugs to you and milo. |
Jada has LP in both back knees. My vet doesn't suggest having surgery until she show symptoms of it bothering her (which she never has and she is 6 years old) My vet also recommended supplementing with Cosuquin or dasuquin and I have used both with great success. Good luck and I know how stressful these things are. |
Did the vet say what grade Milo's LP is? I have one with grade 4 in both knees she is going to be 8 and she is doing good. She does want me to pick her up most times rather than jump up the 2 stairs to go outside. Since she is pee pad trained she doesn't have to go out a lot during the day. She still jumps down. Another one of mine had grade 3 in one leg and 2 in the other. She had to have surgery on the grade 3 knee as she had trouble with it. That was 3 years ago and she is doing good also. All of mine are trained from day one to use the ramp to get up on the bed. None of them have ever learned to jump on or off furniture which I think helps preserve their knees. I had a very elderly rescue who had it in his right knee and never needed surgery. He lived to be an estimated 19 years and never showed any problem with it. So I know it is upsetting to hear, many times they never need surgery. If they do they usually do very well after. I agree a board certified orthopedist is the only one I would trust to do the surgery. I hope Mr. Milo never requires surgery! |
I have an 11yr old poodle that has had this all his life. The only sign he has EVER given that it bothers him is the occasional skip when running and he doesnt do that all of the time. The 6yr old Chi here also has this and it hasnt ever slowed him down. He has not ever shown signs of pain. You might take Milo to an orthopedic vet and let that vet decide if surgery is needed at this time. |
My Zada had LP and had both knees operated on at the same time, (and she wasn't even limping) then my Azrael had one knee done. (even though she has grade 3 in both, she was only limping on one leg) Please, don't have the surgery done unless she is actually limping, and when surgery is needed, do NOT go to a regular Vet. but go to the orthopedic surgeon. I made a major mistake with Zada by letting him do the surgery on both her knees, and since it wasn't done correctly, she had to have surgery again, (on the leg she was limping on)but this time by an orthopedic surgeon. He said not to have surgery unless they are limping. I've learned a lot from him and am just passing this information on to you so you can do the same. |
Thanks for all the feedback, the vet did not say what grade it was, and he is not showing any signs of pain. He is an athelete.he loves to run run run and jump up and down. I was so worried thinking that i HAD to have him get surgery even though he is not showing signs of pain, while i do trust my vet, sometimes i wonder if some vet clinics arejust out to get more money, if that makes sense. Mr. Milo is always active and never shows signs of pain or distress so i think we will hold off on that surgery unless absolutely necessary! Thanks so much for this info!!!!! |

Valentino also has LP on his right leg. His vet said it was grade 2 and suggested surgery but after doing some research and reading up on other YT members experience I too decided to not go ahead with the surgery until he shows signs of pain. He's very active, goes on long walks never limps or lifts his leg up the only symtom he had, which is actually why I took him in to get his legs checked, is that his knee sometimes cracks when he gets up or jumps. I also have him on cosequin to help with his LP. |
