Sleeping habits I was wonder when in the house do ur fur babies stay on the move like they seem to cant sit still lol welp thats bentley...at night do u guys comfine your fur babies to one spot or are they allowed to roam the house? I want to try and let bentley roam at night i usually put him on his leash and put the handle benjimd the door so he only can move a little bit or stay in his bed. Is that a bad way to do it? What do you guys think? |
I don't allow my Yorkie's to roam the house at night. My yorkshire terrier's are confined to my bedroom and have learned to sleep the whole night through on my bed with me (they don't wake up until I wake up). I think it is much better for their "potty schedule". If you don't want your Yorkshire terrier being on your bed or in a crate, maybe you could make a little x-pen in your bedroom. I just think it could be dangerous having your little guy roam around at night. There is no telling what he could get himself into unsupervised. Having him confined somewhere might eventually teach him "this is bed time" and to rest at this time... but giving him access to roam might make his sleeping habits a little funny. Also, I think there are potential dangers with your Yorkshire terrier sleeping with a leash on, like accidental chocking maybe? Good Luck with finding an answer!! Your Bentley is such a cute lil guy :) Also, increasing the amount of exercise he gets during the day might help with his inability to sit still at night time. I'm sorry! I know that is not the best advice ever. Hopefully another member with more experience with this problem could chime in with more hopeful advice then I can give lol. |
My boys are in the bedroom all night. There is too much a curious Yorkie can get into while I am sleeping. Just now while I was at church JoJo chewed up a clothespin. Who knows what he would do at night. Better to be safe and keep them where you know where they are. |
Sleepin habits Thanks guys i keep him on his leash at night tho i was just making sure it wasnt a bad thing |
You actually keep a harness & leash on him all night long? Why don't you just put him in a playpen, or a crate, or on your bed? I'd be worried he'd get caught up in the leash, or it around his neck while I was sleeping.. |

During the day, Harry has full run of the house....it was puppy-proofed until I could fully trust him. At night, Harry's in his (open) crate next to our bed, he has full roam of our bedroom if he wants it. Do you truly put on his leash and contain him like that at night? Yep, I think it's bad...:( |
my dogs have full run of the house during the day and they rarely sleep :D at night each dog sleeps in their own crate in our bedroom.. |
My two Yorkies have full roam all the time, but they choose to sleep (or bark when kitties move around...) all night with us in our bed. Mine are only on a lead when I am on the other end of it. If I had to confine them, it would be in a large, spacious crate or expen, etc. in the room with us, but that is not necessary in our case. |
Tea i feel kinda bad doing that but i just know he will roam at night i just know bentley i didnt want him to get use to being m my bed because he has his own Quote:

Do you plan to let him have roam of the WHOLE house or just of your bedroom? If it is your bedroom that should be okay, but if it is of your whole house make sure there is nothing out that he can get ahold of before you go to bed at night that could cause him harm. I think if you just let him off the leash and harness in your bedroom with the door shut he would probably settle down and go to sleep. The harness and leash being on all night probably make him uncomfortable and in anticipation of a walk, which make him not want to go to sleep. So I think giving him free roam of an enclosed area in your home would be safer for him and probably more relaxing for him. Good luck, and let us know how he does!!! :p |
Dree roam Well i was goin to just let him roam the whole place he usually doesnt go n e where like now he has free roam but he just stay n watever room we are in i may wait till i get him another collar n a tag soni can hear him if he gets up at night, wat do u think Quote:

Lilly has a small bathroom she stays in all night. That's her room pretty much. I just borrow it to shower in and go potty myself. LOL She is quite content with that setup. Do you have a small room like that? |
Why dont you just crate hime at night??? |
Well for my Bentley he has a kennel in the bedroom. Of course he's only about 10 weeks and he just came home with me on Saturday morning so roaming is just not an option. His breeder said she had been kennel training him before I got him. First night he protested for about 5-10 minutes(I know he was missing mommy) but then settled into his bed for the night. Last night he whimpered for less than a minute and then settled down and watched me get ready for bed and even talk on the phone without making a peep. I do keep a furry pal in his bed. When he gets bored during the night he plays for a little and then off to sleep again. As a matter of fact I woke up around 1 this morning to his little play growls. Was so cute. The off to sleep again he went. He is learning when the bedroom light is out it's time for bed and he won't be let out again until the bedroom light turns on in the morning. I figure my girls and I don't roam at night so he needs to learn the same habit. :D |
