My Max doesn't bark when anybody comes in. I really thought he would be my little guard dog from what all I have heard @ yorkies. My son came in the house & back to the bedroom where we were sleeping & Max never made a sound. He barks if he wants out of the crate or if Ive bn gone and he hears me coming in. :confused::confused: I think this is better than constant barking but I would like a little alert if someone comes in. Thanks

Hmmm, can we combine our dogs?? Mine barks at EVERYTHING, including when my hubby comes home from work (but not when I come home). The pipes knocking, a squirrel running across the roof, someone driving too slowly down the road, the UPS/Fedex/mailman, pizza delivery, anything in the yard on on the deck, the doorbell on the TV...you name it.

As Marhcarter has said, our little guys can be from rather "outspoken" to very quite like yours, but either can be adjusted. I have, and prefer the more outspoken approach, given that I'm very conscious (ha ok paranoid :rolleyes:) about anyone coming onto the property.

Actually, my guys weren't as vocal as they are now. When they bark at the right thing, I praise them highly. And when they're wrong, they don't get that, but, you must look each time, make that evaluation and take some action.

It's training, and it takes time for their eyes, ears and noses, to figure out how to get petted, praised and given a treat. :D

Columbo had us fooled like that in the beginning, too...:D But seriously, I'd bet that the older Max gets and the more confident he gets, you will see some of that behavior. Maybe not barking at your son because he is part of the family, but when someone's at the door, etc.
