New Yorkie Questions
 

Hi!
My family just got a new, 9 week old Yorkie named Sergeant. He's been with us a week (so he's 10 weeks now :p). I just wanted to double check that we're doing everything okay and not missing any important Yorkie factors.

He gets fed the puppy food his breeder gave him four times a day, with a little Parmesan cheese on top. His treats are honey nut Cheerios. He also gets a nutrical supplement once a day. My whole family knows the signs of hypoglycemia and were all super vigilant with him.

We are paper training him and he's only allowed out in our fenced back yard until he gets all of his shots.

He's never, ever alone. Someone from our family of five is always at home with him and will be for a long, long time.

He plays with our other dog, who is a 9 year old Affenpinscher, and she is making sure he doesn't ever get away with biting at her :p. He adores her, she's still getting used to him. He gets a lot of naps in during the day. In fact, right now he is asleep next to me with our Affen :)

He's 1 lb 9 oz. He's not crate trained (our Affen never was) and has more toys and beds than he knows what to do with. Our family loves how bright and happy and smart he is. He's great with new people and loves meeting them until its nap time!

Is there anything were missing or need to know? I want to make sure we're doing it right!

Welcome to YT! Everything sounds good but why the parmesan cheese? I've never heard of adding this. Dogs don't usually digest lactose well, my boy is actually allergic to milk. Can't wait to see pictures!

My dad read on another site that a little was good to help them eat their food. He does eat a lot more now with it, before not so much. I'm so scared of him becoming hypoglycemic

Welcome and congratulations! It's great he won't be alone much and you are vigilant for the signs of hypoglycemia. The best preventative his getting him to eat frequently which it sounds like you are doing. We love pictures here.

Welcome to YT! It sounds like you did a lot of research and are totally handling everything just right. I have heard that some are lactose intolerant but mine love cheese and parm sprinkled on the food definitely helps them eat if they are picky eaters. I just wouldn't overdo the parm.

Thanks! He seems to be tolerating it really well so far. Having a puppy is definitely a big change from having an older dog that never chewed and is house broken. He sleeps and then runs around like a mad man and sleeps some more.

Welcome to YorkieTalk! It sounds like your doing pretty good. For the future its pretty important small breed puppies should stay with there moms until 12 weeks at least. Hope everything continues to great with your pup but we are here if you have any questions.

That's what I keep seeing is that they should be 12 weeks.
It's a little late now, but fortunately he's going to be supervised 24/7 for many, many months to come.
My grandma breeds larger dogs, and we've raised Claire since birth.

He eats a lot for something so small. He loves his dog food and his cheerio's! I bet he's already gained a lot of weight from 1.7 lbs this past week.

Hello and welcome to YT! Your little guy is adorable and I love his name! Sounds like you are all doing great with your pup. Good thing neither of mine are lactose intolerant as I have been giving them cheese for as long as I can remember - they love it! :)

Thank you! He sure is a handful, that's for sure! One second he's sound asleep napping and the next he's up and running around like a mad man! We got him really young, but he seems to be doing really well so far. He's got more than enough people to cuddle and snuggle with and one cranky old dog to bother :) I can't wait to see how he grows and what other trouble he may get into >_< If he's gone too long and it's too quiet, you know he's chewing/peeing/doing something silly.

Welcome to YT. As a trainer I suggest he learn to use a crate as his safe little den and here is why.
Why should I crate train my puppy ? What kind works best ?


I prefer wire crates. You can leave it open or cover it to make a snuggy den.
I think all dogs should be crate trained. Almost all dogs will have to be in a crate at some point in their life. Crating should not cause more stress but , make them feel safer in a stressful situation. Your Yorkie will have to be crated, if they are ill or have to stay at the Vets over night, or have surgery. Dogs can travel on a train, ship, or air planes and stay in many motels, if they can be crated and behave nicely. If a disaster happens, a hurricane, flood, earth quake, mud slide, tornado, or fire and you have to leave your home, a crate is a safe secure place for your dog to be during transport. ALL Animal friendly shelters require dogs to be crated when inside the shelter building. Dogs that bark excessively, whine, act crazy or aggressive etc. will not be allowed to stay.
I know this first hand, we had to leave our home here in Fla. because of a hurricane. My dogs behaved beautifully, they were cozy dry, had their own, blankets toys , food and crates. Some people had to rush to Wal-mart and buy a crate before it closed. Their dogs (and Cats) barked, whined, or screamed and tried to get out of the crate. Several people had to put their dogs outside the building, under a tarp, so people could sleep. It was sad and awful for everyone. Please crate train your puppy, you will be glad you did.
