Questioning if my dog is a Yorkshire Terrier or a Silky Terrier? Hi, I've had my "Yorkshire Terrier" for 7 years since he was 4 months old. I was doing some research on Yorkshire Terriers and looking at pictures when I started questioning myself. My Yorkshire Terrier is 15 lbs. and doesn't have a long silky coat. I considered that he might be a red legged Yorkie. Then, I saw pictures of Silky Terriers and I noticed that my dog looks a lot like a Silky. His paper work says he was a Yorkshire Terrier. We purchased him from Pets Landing(now closed) in Phoenix, Arizona. Can anyone help me determine what he is?:) |

to: Shaggy05 I understand your concern. Your pet truly looks very little like either a Yorkie OR a Silky. I have papers stating that our Graysee is a full-blooded Yorkshire Terrier, but she looks much more akin to a Silky (longer snout, bushier hair, taller, heavier, etc.) I have been pondering getting a DNA test done to determine once and for all exactly WHAT her genetic make-up is, and if you want to know for certain, I'd suggest doing the same. There are a few places to research, one being Wisdom Panel, and there is also DDC Veterinary, but these cost anywhere from $60-$80, so you need to be certain you want to spend the money. Actually, since we never planned to breed or show our baby, it really doesn't matter much, as we love her no matter WHAT she is! :animal36 |
Actually, if you research Australian Terriers, you may find a dog that looks very similar to yours. Plus, Silkies are a cross between a Yorkie and an Australian, and the Australian Terrier is thought to have originated from a mixture of Yorkies, Cairn, Skye, Irish, and other canines from Great Britain, so they all basically share the same heritage. |
Do you keep his coat cut this short or is this just the way it grows? If that is the way it grows I would say he is a mix. My daughter has a silky and his coat is like Laddy's. They have a longer snout and different earset than a yorkie. Sadly if bought from a pet store its hard to say for sure but either way he is adorable. |
