Bringing home our puppy Friday HELP!
 
Ok I have read everything I can get my hands on. We get our baby Kopper on Friday he is 12 weeks old. I have two children Kaegan (5 on Feb. 20th) and Karter (15 months). I am fully prepared to keep our new puppy safe until our children are old enough to be trusted. I am planning on crate training this way Kopper has a very safe place to rest and to aid in house training. I have the crate and a bed as well as some blankets that will be just his. I am going to keep him on the food the breeder has him on Royal Canin. I am going tomorrow to get his food as well as food and water bowl. Are there any treats or toys best for our yorkie baby? I am a stay at home mom so will be here pretty much all day every day. Please let me know if I forgot anything in preparation for our little guy. We are just so excited about our new edition!!!!!

I will suggest you get an x pen since your children are young,and the puppy needs a safe area to be. that would be the best investment you can do for the safety of your new puppy. also a tube of nutracal puppy.

My youngest daughter will be 3 in May, and Sam is 14 weeks today. it's been an epic challenge having a new pup and a toddler.

I recommend two great books that all my new owners are instructed to get...."Yorkies For Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide". These books cover practically everything you will need to know and make super reference books the entire life of your puppy!

I agree with Carmen as well. It will be interesting to hear how your lot is doing with the new pup. Please keep us posted and share lots of picts! We love picts!!:thumbup:

a good puppy teether toy, my silkies love the nylabones, you just have to be watchful with everything you allow your pup to chew.

I would get an exercise pen for the pup. Make sure any treats you buy are not made an China I would also do the same for your dog dishes. Some good treats are Cheerios, Zukes, Blue buffalo and Mother Hubbard. Teething toys would also be good. Good luck and congrats on your new pup.

cloud star or buddy biscuits are good treats, made in the usa, stay away from china treats, zukes is also good. Some natures miracle or something like that for possible accidents. No collars for the pup unless it is a breakaway cat collar, they can get caught on something and it would not be good. Enjoy they are the best dogs

Everything everyone has said so far is great. I bought Izzy a cloth teething chew toy that you wet and put in the freezer for them to chew on - their little teeth really bother them when they are coming in. She loves ice too... maybe that's why. Also puppy pads, if you are going to train puppy to potty inside. An x-pen would be a great investment. I don't use nylabones as I have heard there were some issues with them - I do give my pups bully sticks (and recently there was noise about these also - regarding germs and calories - I cut off the ends after a couple of days to keep the germ count down and it takes them a while to eat, so I am really not worried about the calorie count) but both pups love to chew on those. Oh, a blanket or bed for little Kooper to sleep on. My pups love those little braided rope toys to play fetch with and they make a really small one. Oh and a Kong - another great teether for them. I think that should be it. Good luck and you will have to post some pictures of Kooper once he arrives!

Just in case you're getting your stuff from Petsmart, I'm not entirely sure I'd purchase that "Puppy Starter Kit" again. I bought one and haven't really gotten my money's worth. Kinda lame.

But I WILL be taking Chewie to puppy training here in a couple of weeks. You may be planning on that anyway, but it might be a wise thing to do especially with the little ones in the house.

Thanks everyone I feel overwhelmed but I know I have done my research and to be honest a toddler is very much like a puppy so surely I can do this :D As for puppy training class I literally live in the middle of no where spool I better learn from reading the books lol. I may get an x pen after he is here. I am just going to see how everyone does together for now. I am going to Petsmart in Tulsa tomorrow (traveling for doctor surely we should shop for puppy!!) I plan on getting his food a harness and leash no collar until he is a lol bigger and then just for bling. And his food since I can't get it where I live (far southeast corner of Oklahoma) I appreciate all the comments and I will definitely post a family picture once all the boys are together and settled a bit.

My youngest daughter was 3 when we got our two (yes,we got 2 pups at once! lol) and IŽd advise you to watch your children around the new pup like a hawk at first ;) My daughter LOVED (and still does of course) the pups,and everything was great exept for the fact that to her,they were 2 new fantastic interactive cuddly toys...so she was quite rough until she fully understood that they are two living creatures and babys at that! ;) She wanted to hug and kiss and squish them,so even though it was a VERY tiring job,we had to constantly ask her to leave them alone (if she was being to overwhelming) or to be gentle.My pups were always sooooo happy and exited to see the kids go to bed lol.Congrats on your new puppy! You are going to LOVE him to bits! :D I have a soft spot for the boys..Milo is my second male and he is SO afectionate! You are in for a treat :)

I agree with all of the above info. The only thing I have to add is that I found that the Hartz dura play toys are fantastic and indestructible. Huey has 2 of the bones that he has had from day one (almost 4 years!) They get dirty and I scrub them in the sink with a soft brush and dish liquid & they are good as new. The have some kind of foam filling that keeps the squeaker intact. We also have a small dura play ball that is the perfect size for Huey to carry around. He loves to run through the house squeaking them & they are the only toys he has ever had that he has been unable to destroy or remove the squeakers. The one duraplay toy that I don't recommend is the duraplay zoo balloon toy. It took him less than an hour to chew the stem of the "balloon" off. :D Congrats on the new puppy and keep us informed on how its going. Lots and lots of pictures, too!
