New puppy, and need some advice
 

Hi all,

So I just got my new puppy yesterday, he is 3/4 yorkie and 1/4 s**tzhu..haven't settled on a name yet, it's between dozer and moto...anyways I was wondering..so yesterday he did really well, played with all his toys, slept most of the day, seemed to be a pretty relaxed little guy, the came bed time..now he is used to a crate because he and his two brothers slept in one overnight together. And throughout the day he would go in it and sleep in the crate which has a blanket that his mother slept on.so we went to bed at 10pm and at 12am he woke up and whined, so I waited for him to stop for a split second and took him out to his peepad where he went pee, then put him back..for about ten minutes he whined but I put a warm rice bean bag thing in there as well as a ticking clock and that was good until 330am and he woke up again and we went pee again..then this time the whining wouldn't stop...so I put him, crate and all in the bathroom, and he proceeded to whine every hour or so until 7am. When it was time to get up I took him out when he was quiet and played with him and he went pee and I got ready for work, and when I left I didn't really acknowledge him, I just gave him a small kong with some peanut butter in it and left, I am leaving him during the day in the bathroom, so he has more room to play until I get home for lunch. I would only pick him up if he was sitting quietly, but of course he was following me all over the house while I got ready...now does all of that sound ok? Or should I be doing something different? To make him more calm..or is it just because he is a new baby and he just needs a few days to adjust...sorry that's a long post...thanks ahead for any advice

Hello and welcome to YT! I think it sounds about right for a new little baby. How old is your little guy? It will take a few days to adjust. Actually Jack was great that first night, it was the second and third that were bad. Then a routine was started and he did get better. You have to remember that they are small and young, so several potty breaks during the night are pretty common. Good luck, but it does sound like things are pretty normal from what I can remember.

Thank you :) he is 8.5 weeks old. He's a doll, he's got lots of energy...I think I am worrying myself to much, haha I am worried I am going to end up doing something wrong and cause him to have bad behaviour..I should have taken a couple of more days off work, so he could adjust..but it wasn't possible at the time...

I know right now is a crucial time for socialization....so can I introduce him to other people and dogs right now? He is vaccinated..or is it to soon and would that stress him out?

That sounds about right. Honey woke me up at 2:00 am every morning for a week straight then at 5:00 am. Im not sure about letting him be around other dogs right now...I wouldnt. Im sure others will let you know whats best. Good Luck

I'd say no socialization until he's had ALL of his shots - somewhere around 16 weeks.

He is very young and small dogs should stay with there moms until 12 weeks but sense he is with you so young you have to be very very careful about making sure he eats every couple of hours and you need to make sure you have nutrical and know about hypoglycemia also make sure you are leaving him food out all the time. You don't want him around other dogs and areas others dogs visit until he has all of his shots. Having a puppy is like having a baby and you can't really expect to get much sleep. I would make sure that his crate is in the bedroom where he can see you not locked away where he is alone and scared remember he is used to being with his mom and siblings not alone. I would not wait until he stops crying to take him potty because his bladder is so very small at this point and I have heard many times they are unable to hold it really well until at least 12 weeks. Mine is now 11 weeks.. I think hmm yea that sounds right lol I got her at 8 weeks and she sleeps in a crate on a table at eye level with me next to my bed... Not once has she woke me up during the night!! She is as quiet as a church moose until she knows I am awake then she starts crying.

Most puppies cry at night if they are alone. They are used to sleeping in a nice warm group so it is difficult for them to transition to sleeping alone. Did you warm up your heating bag again for him? Having a heat source and a nice soft bed will help him to sleep longer. It is good that he is pottying when you take him out. They are little and their bladders don't hold a lot. That is one of the draw backs of a small dog.

Dogs are pack animals so he is going to want to be with you. It is normal for him to follow you around. You are now his new family and he looks to you for companionship as well as for all his other needs. The puppy stage is very demanding but it does not last forever. As he gets older it will get easier but he is always going to look to you as his companion and family member.

Mine are going to be 2 in May and they still follow me around. LOL This sounds really normal for a puppy to cry and want to be with you. I got lucky with Ahi and she didn't need to pee in the middle of the night. She loves her sleep. I let mine sleep with me in bed. Then we all get some good rest. :D

Thank you for all your great answers.. Would it be a good idea to have him in his crate on my bed or would that cause more problems down the road? I have been leaving food for him, cause I read about the hypoglycaemia. Yes I did heat the bag up for him again the 2nd time, I will make sure to keep doing that..

I agree now is a to crucial time to introduce your puppy to all kinds of people. But your puppies little feet should not touch the ground where other animals or dogs have been. Parvo and other diseases are a serious threat until he has had all his baby shots. Take your baby to the bank, shopping malls, schools, family parties and so on. Use a doggy stroller, purse, sling or carried in your arms to keep him up off the ground. We take our pups to the local school crossing areas. We make poster board sign that says DOG in TRAINING please ask to pet. Take some germ wipes toweletts, doggy poo bags and disposable pee-pad to use if he has to go. Make sure you control the situation. This is a bonding time for your pup. Do not let anyone hold your pup, only pets are allowed. Responsible breeders would be doing this people greeting during this six to 12 week old period of time. Sadly the Mother dog teaches by example and with gentle correction. Mother Dog teaches pups how to behave with other dogs during this period, and begins to teach potty basics like how to keep the nest clean. But your pup does not have her or littermates. So you will have to teach bite inhibition and start potty training. The lessons your puppy learns from birth to 16 weeks will become part of his adult personality.
Pretty much what you have posted sounds normal. Use the Yorkie Talk Library to get some good information, Read some basic training books and find a method that works for you. Congrats on your puppy and Welcome to YT.
