What age? I am having Harley neutered so:eek:n. I have set an appt with my vet. already. He will be 4 months next month. I was told you have to wait until puppies are 6 months??? |
From what I have read here 6 months to 1 year seems standard in us, in UK I think they will neuter from about 4 months, just depending on the puppy, their weight and health. There seems to be a real big deal in US about getting this done within a year, ia am happy for my boy to have his toys, for a little while, not thinking about breeding and he never gets a chance to do anything except hump his blanket anyway so I will see how he does and when it seems right or if he is having behavioural issues etc. |
There are many people who wait until 8 months to see if the dog retains any of their puppy teeth and then they have the neuter/spay done at the same time to avoid having to undergo anesthesia twice. Buster did retain his baby canines and had to have them removed. There is also a concern about having it done before the growth plates close here are some threads. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...-age-spay.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ur-yorkie.html |
Just had Amy spayed and she had just turned 5 months old. Vet said that was a good time to have it done. Came through it with flying colors. |
I wait until 6 months at least. |
I had to wait to get Henri neutered until he was about 7 months due to weight, the vet said he had to be at least 5 pounds before he could be safely put under. Good luck with your furbaby and don't try to worry too much when he gets it done! ;) |
Buster was six months old when was neutered, Maggie was six months old when she was spayed. |
It can be done at 4 months, but I wouldn't recommend that. Several reasons...most important being the weight. A 4 month old Yorkie usually is less than 5 lbs and the more you let them grow and gain weight, the better it is on their little bodies to go under the anesthesia. Some people do it at 6 months...this is standard in almost all breeds. I think spaying females before their first spay is the reason for this timeline. Not sure it really matters with a male's neuter (except to stop any marking he is doing). However, with Yorkies, I suggest waiting until 8 months because Yorkies retain baby teeth often. By 8 months, you'll know if they have been all lost or some still remain. If some still remain, they can be pulled while under the same anesthesia as for the neuter/spay. The less often you have to put a little under anesthesia, the better. |
Also, with a male, you should probably wait until they testicles have dropped down. I would wait until around 8 months, too! |
