Carrier/ Crate Training Hello all I'm a new Yorkie parent! I just got my first Yorkie Brooklyn on Saturday. We brought her home in this Petmate Pet Taxi Fashion (Small) : Target It was a two hour drive and she really didnt whine too much. I figured she would whine more because she was taken away from what she knew but she whimpered a little. I want her to get use to being in the carrier so when we have to take her out she wont whine and stuff or if I ever need to be gone for a period of time because usually I'm at home. I dont want her to sleep in there because she does pretty good outside of it especially since she is pad training and she doesn't have to wake me up to go. I just want her to be able to go in there and relax when the time comes. I tried putting treats in there to lure her in without it seeming like a punishment. She started going in there but she gets the treats and come out. One time when she went in I put her toy in there and closed it and she went off. However I never let her out until she quiet for at least 10 seconds or more. Should I continue to put her in there for periods of time everyday and just give it time? Or should I try something else? I'm sorry if this has been asked before but i just wanted to give specifics. |

Keep up the good work! That's the same carrier that I have for Blazer and I trained him the same as you are doing. I started letting him play in it and have treats and I would lock him in it for a few minutes at a time during the day. When he was quiet I would let him out and praise him like crazy. Every day we went longer and longer. Every night he sleeps in his crate with no complaints. Blazer is 8 months old now and I'm starting to trust him more outside of the crate when we are gone so he doesn't spend extended time in his crate- other than for sleeping at night. |
Hi and Welcome!! When I brought Riley home I would spend a little time each night walking him around from room to room and treating every once on a whole. Just trying to make if Fun!! I have a couple of Kwigy-Bo carriers for Riley... For going out and shopping. Kwigy.Bo : Shop And for traveling on the plane I have a Small Navy/Black sturdibag which is awesome!!! It has tw tent rods so it is very flexible to comfort under any plane seat. You're doing everything I have read to do on this site. Welcome to YT and I love little Brooklyn's name. So sweet! You might be happy to know there are several new Yorkie owners on this site right now. I pick mine up on Sunday! Congrats on your new baby! |
I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as some when it comes to training, but getting my Maci comfortable with her crate was one thing that went very well for us. I only use it when I'm leaving the house, but she does ok in there even if I'm home for a bit too. when she was a puppy I would just pick her up and put her in her crate and say "kennel" and give her a tiny treat. Gradually she learned when I said kennel to just run over and hop in her crate and she would get a treat. Now, I sometimes don't even have to say Kennel. when Maci sees me putting on my shoes and getting keys she'll just get in her kennel on her own. This worked well for us. I wouldn't say she loves her crate, as she doesn't really just go hang out in there, but she definitely doesn't mind it when she has to be left alone. Good luck with training! I'm sure that if your puppy doesn't associate her crate with bad things then she will learn to tolerate it in no time. |
Thanks everyone for the advice. I am know using one of the house trainning schedules that I saw on this site to help me with training. At first she was doing so good but now she has just accidents when she was rarely having them. So now I can't let her have so much freedom. So she is in her crate more during the day starting today since I am following a schedule. She whines on and off but I hoping she will get use to it and be able to enjoy it more because I am in the room with her. |
