Help...Need Sleep??? I started with Harley in our bedroom in a crate until we found out my boyfriend is allergic to dogs:confused: His doctor and our vet recommended not to have him in the bedroom. Sooo off to the living room we went. He was ok as long as I would lie on the couch and reassure him I was there until he fell asleep. He started to pee pee his bed and crying!!! in the crate. Crying to the extent, to where I could not calm him down. Another YT member told me not to crate him, he is too young, 11weeks and have a reverse affect on him. I tried to put him in his Xpen to sleep on his bed, and he will cry as well. He throws a fit! I put him on the couch with me, and he is content(go figure) it breaks my heart to hear him I cant sleep on the couch every night Does everyone's little one sleep w/them? Any suggestion? Should I just let him cry until he falls asleep? what to do??? |
he had the taste of being in the same room...and hes still a baby so imo they do not like to be alone...do you have one of the heart beat dolls....i cant remember the name but i know others can chime in. maybe that might help and a warming blanket. one of your shirts that has been worn so it smells like you.....good luck i hope he adjusts. |
Thank u, I will try the blanket and doll! I am down for anything at this point... |
Are you sure your boyfriend is allergic to the dog? Yorkies usually are not big allergy causers and yours is very young. Did he have allergy testing? You must have gotten your puppy at a young age if he is only 11 weeks now. Young puppies do need something to keep them warm. Usually they are still cuddling with their mom and litter mates at that age. That is why he is better with you holding him. If you keep him in the crate he needs something to keep him warm and he will need to be let out often to go potty. They have no control at that age and will pee in the crate if not let out in time. |

Maybe if it actually IS the baby your bf is having an allergic reaction to, which is NOT a common event with Yorkies, perhaps some medication for bf will help with his allergy? The baby is still very young and wants him littermates and his mommie, with whom he would be snuggling with if he was still with them. So, now YOU are mommie....he wants to snuggle with you! The warm heart beat snuggle toy may work...I put one of those rice things that you heat in the microwave and wrap around your neck for sore neck....I heat it, cover it with a flannel pj top of mine, curve it around in a U shape, and the babies will all snuggle right up in there (this is the babies that I have had to hand rear and they sleep in an incubator)....Good luck with this quandry....Rather than leave that baby alone, in another room, I would medicate bf if it was me!!!!!!! |
Yes, we are positive. After we got our baby, his allergies got worse, he had blood work done. We both teased about the Dr calling back and telling us he was allergic to Harley! Low and behold, a week later he called back and told us the only thing we didnt want to hear!!! Really... allergic to dogs???? Great!!! I didn't think u could have an allergic reaction to Yorkies |
What a shame! Is he going to be able to remain around Harley? I hope you do not have to rehome Harley at a later date.....or rehome bf!!! Just kidding!!! |

Thats sad tho, it will be hard for you guys. What if you keep his hair real short and regular baths?? I knew a lady with a boxer that she gave a bath with a shampoo called allergroom once a week and this helped her sooo much! |

I'd rehome the BF hahahaha |
Noway will Harley be rehomed and my bofriend loooves him the same! He will never let him go!!! He got him for me!!! |
Well, bottom line is, you will either need to listen to the whining and know that eventually Harley will fall asleep. Getting something to cuddle with and that heart beat doll is a great idea! OR, you're going to need to sleep in the same room with Harley everynight. Which, in my experience, will just lead to Harley training YOU and deciding he could cry and whine even then and eventually you'll get him out to sleep with you. OR, you could sleep in the same room with Harley...with Harley on the couch. I'm thinking you need to be able to stay in bed with the BF. So, xpen (simply because 11 weeks is way too young to expect Harley to be able to hold his pee and poo all night..this way he can go to a pad in the pen) Harley in another room and ear plugs for you. It will KILL you and you will eventually get up and say, "I can't let him cry anymore. I have to go get him." When you do that....stop. I say this because I did this with Mandie. She now knows she owns me and it all started the 2nd night she trained me lol. |
Thank you much on the Allergroom shampoo.I will look into it. |
I know exactly what you mean. I have three kiddos. I knew how to handle them. LOl This liitle one seems to have me wrapped around his little paws. I can't seem to put him down! I did get him @ 9weeks. I guess thats a young age for a Yorkie? This is our family's first puppy. I didn't know that was too young for them to be taken from mommy. |
Well I got to say I am allergic to cats. . . I had 4 ! . . What we are allergic to is actually the animal dander. There is a couple of things you can do. First keep up on dusting and vacuuming in that order. Give a couple hours in between the two to gt everything up as much as possible. Keep one room a "clean room", no animals. (That one for me failed cat locked me in the room. Story for another time) and wash and brush them. ( Yes I washed my cats) that will help with some of the allergins. I hope this helps. It helps for me |
My husband is allergic to cats. Years ago, a stray cat chose us to live with. My husband said no and it was him or the cat. 17 years later after she passed away and over 10 years of allergy shots for my husband later, I was told not to get another cat... I won't, but SHE picked us... What could I do? Anyway, I guess the point I was trying to make is hopefully, your BF might go to the allergist. My husband said it definitely helped him, even with other cats, but mostly the one in our family. He still has benefits from those shots over 12 years later. |

He is very young and probably scared being put where there is no one at he is all alone unlike when he was with the breeder he had is mom and siblings. Its scary for a little tiny pup to be a lone and I am sure he just wants to see you to know he is not alone. |
I am also allergic to cats but have lived with them all my life. If I spend any time touching a cat I have to wash my hands. If I touch my face or eyes after touching a cat I will have a reaction with my eyes tearing and nose running, sneezing, sometimes hives, etc. I keep antihistamines around for just in case. Frequent vacuuming is a must. Humidifiers in the winter time. Someone mentioned the anti dander shampoos. There are also sprays, liquids and conditioners available to help keep dander to a minimum. If you are going to keep the dog these are things that will make life more bearable for you and your BF. Now, if he has asthma it is a whole different story. Asthma is much harder to manage. The Yorkie does not have typical fur but it is usually the dander from the skin that causes allergic reactions. Bathe frequently with the allergy shampoo and conditioners and keep the spray or liquid to wipe your pup down with. It is concerning that your BF is having that big of a reaction to a young pup since it probably does not have that much dander flying around yet. I hope it does not get worse as the puppy grows. |

bwahhahahaha!!! Where ya been stranger? |
Vet said your bf is allergic to dogs didn't say to *this* dog. I have to tell you my husband (soon to be ex) is extremely allergic to dogs, cats, allergic, allergic, allergic to everything. As we speak him and Miss Mini are sleeping in his bed...together. He is not allergic to Mini, but he was when we first got her....MY WONDERFUL vet told me to give her a bath in a very warm room and immediately dry her in warm room and keep her warm...now, it worked, however; he becomes allergic to her if I don't give her a bath every week I think it has to do with the dust or whatever in her hair... I hope it resolves soon, I'd hate to see your bf addicted to Benadryl! Welcome to YT! |
There are medications and injections for allergies. I am allergic to dogs and have a Yorkie because they don't have the shedding pack and with medication we do fine. Your pup is very young to be isolated. |

Thanks ALL you guys have been soooo helpful!!!! Little Harley has been sleeping with me on the couch...heheheh. And my boyfriend snuggles right up to him everynight! I am keeping our bedroom the "clean" room. I bath him often and vacuum as well. We have tile floors, so that seems to help. Im going to get an air purifier and bf takes allergy pill every day. Maybe we will see about shots...lol...You guys are GREAT!!!! :) Im gonna try the Snuggly Puppy too;) |
My husband is also allergic to dogs and extremely so to cats, but has absolutely no problem with our yorkie. Like others said, it may not be "this" dog. |
Most people are allergic to the dander- Not the actual hair/fur. Is he still just as allergic if puppy has just been washed and dried? How allergic is allergic? Can't breath vs. itchy eyes? I know a guy at the dog park who is severely allergic to dog so his parents would not let him have one but as an adult he own 2- 1 golden and 1 lab mix. He wears gloves always at the parks and his dogs get bathed a least once per week. No carpets or drapes. Vacuum wearing a mask and does so daily. Dogs can't got him is bedroom. He says he grooms them at least 2 times a day- Wearing gloves and a mask- Then must immediately change his clothes and shower. He also takes daily meds, carries an Epi-pen and get allergy shots. He wants dogs so he endures a ton of personal discomfort so that he can have them. |

Wow, that's awful! He does have to endure alot!!! But, you do alot when you love your little guys. His are not that extreme. He has always had allergies. After we got Harley, the itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, congestion got worse. He also breaks out on his fingertips. The dr told us may be from after cleaning up pee pee accidents. |
I've been sleeping with Emy on the couch since I got her last June. she is now 10 months old. We start out in her crate when we go to bed, next to my bed, sometime in the middle of the night she gives me a grrrrrrrrrr..I wake up and she is sitting up in her crate, can't have her waking up my DH so I get her out of her crate and take her into the living room, I let her go potty on her xpen pee pads, then we lay down on the couch, with her inbetween my legs until time to get up...I'm used to it now, and I don't mind, I like having her warm and close to me......what we do for our babies.....I just love her so much... |
