Silky vs. Yorkie Is it possible to tell the difference between a Silky and a Yorkie just by looking at them. To me a Silky's nose is pointier and a Silky is larger. I am looking at rescuing a 3 year old and the rescue organization says she is a Yorkie with floppy ears. To me she might look more like a Silky. Is there a definite way to tell the difference by looks? |
That's how I tell the difference... Silkies are longer, typically larger (but there are teapot Yorkies! :) ) and a longer, pointier snout. |
Size alone is not a good judge. I know many Silkies in my area that are 5-6 lbs. My Mylee barely tips the scale at 7 lbs and she is a Silky. however AKC standard is 9-11 lbs. I personally think they have a distinct look to them. If you google Silky Terrier images http://www.google.com/search?q=silky+terrier+images&hl=en&tbo=u&qscrl=1& rlz=1T4ADRA_enUS453US454&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X &ei=j5AJUf22BufuyAHYzIGYDg&sqi=2&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw= 1920&bih=852 I think the Silkies stand out pretty clearly even though there are some obvious Yorkies mixed into these pictures the Silky characteristics become easier to identify when you can see many to compare to at the same time. |
I really think Bailey is a Silky or a mix of both silky/yorkie. His hair is soft and long where I thought Yorkies were a bit more course. Bailey weighs 8.2lbs but then again, there are Yorkie's here that weigh over 15lbs. At the end of the day, if you must own a true blue blooded Yorkie, I wouldn't buy from anyone but a top rated breeder. On the other hand, if you just want a good companion who will love you like no other, get the dog regardless of the title. |

Oh goodness, she looks soo cute!! and very sweet. Looks more yorkie to me. Maybe she is a silky yorkie mix. I have seen alot of Pure yorkies that look just like her tho.:) Either way, i dont think i would turn her down.:( |
She is a 4 hour drive away so I will see her in person then. She has a vet appointment next Thursday to spay, dental and get microchipped. Keeping my fingers crossed she is healthy. |
Here is the AKC standards for Silkies and Yorkies, I don't know if it helps but hopefully it will. Good luck getting your new furbaby! :) Silky - Silky Terrier Page Yorkie - Yorkshire Terrier Page |
She looks all yorkie to me.. hugs, |
I think she looks like she has at least some silky in her. She is very cute. Good luck! |
Looks yorkie to me, but I'm no expert. If Carmen isn't seeing Silky, then I'm gonna have to say it's yorkie because if there were Silky traits..I know she'd see 'em. :) |

Both breeds are so cute and adorable. I really think Brandi is a silky as she was a rescue and I'm not really sure of her background. I do know she is just a lovable furball I can't get enough of. I believe silkies have a more rectangular body and longer snout. |
