excessive oily skin, especially on top of head Hi, I got a yorkie for Christmas and he has oily skin, especially when he gets hot and the top of his head is really oily. He has no flaky skin. He is fed Iams puppy Please help. |
Hello and Welcome! How old is your baby? Have you taken him into the vet for a checkup? Diet also plays an important part in the condition of the skin and coat, I personally don’t really care for Iams dog food- Do you feed him anything other than Iams? |
Do you bath the pup a lot? I had that issue and mine gets a lot of baths and when I switched to Pantene instead of dog shampoo it cleared it. |
I personally wouldn't use a human shampoo on dogs- dog shampoo is best, as its PH balanced for dogs.. Human shampoo is balanced for humans.. human shampoo is also designed to remove body oils, so it may dry your dog's skin and coat out more. Also you are not sure what is going on with your pup, so I would really take him into the Vet to see what he thinks before trying any shampoo. |

I only feed him Iams puppy which is what the breeder fed him. He is 14 weeks old today. He has had two vet checks for regular shots and the bet says he looks good. I had bathed him once with Dawn dish detergent and then a puppy shampoo following that. And his head was still oily. Vet said not to use Dawn for bathing him. Also, he weighs 5-1/2 lbs. is that okay for 14 weeks old? |

I agree with checking in with your vet first. Yorkies usually need a bath once a week. Whatever products you use, make sure it is tear free so that you don't hurt your puppy's eyes. |
If it were me, I would switch foods. I would also contact the Vet first and let them know if the concerns you are having.. see what he says then go from there. |
