Wireless or wire-based dog fence Anyone have experience with wireless dog fence for the breed? We just got two Yorkies from a non-profit rescue group, they are doing great so far, and I'm trying to decide if the smallness of the breed can tolerate this type of fence for our backyard? |
Welcome to YT.:) Nope, this type of fence isn't good for yorkies (or any breed). Besides the pain, there are otherrisks. Yrkies are so small and a target for stray dogs, very large birds, coyotes, etc. This does nothing to keep other animals out. Some dogs don't care about the shock either. They will run throughit and then be afraid to come back in the yard. Because yorkies should always be supervised outside, a leash or even a tie out (under supervision) would be better. |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on the 2 new additions to your family. I agree with Crystal. Skip the electric fence. It doesn't keep predators out, and it can affect the dogs' health (heart and nervous system). Go with a real fence, leash, or tie out. Whichever one you choose, always stay outside with the dogs to supervise. |
Congratulations on your rescue puppies. How great that you have taken the babies into your home. :) As a former (temporary) wireless fence user (I do still have the fence) for a large breeds mixed dog that weighed 120+ lbs., I would NOT even consider using it for my Yorkies as I see no need, and nothing to gain from doing so...plus several harmful things that are very real dangers and could easily occur. Very small dogs have dangers and needs unlike large breed dogs and I would NEVER (ever) use a wireless for a little Yorkie or other similar sized dog. There are/may be weight/size requirements and recommendations stipulated by the wireless fence manufacturers for their products...you might look into that...plus...there have been other "wireless fence" threads on YT...you might find some valuable information in them as well. A search should find the information. Just my opinion...:teethysmi Give ownership of these little ones a bit of time. Yorkies are 'heart thieves' and more like toddlers/children that 'dogs'...you may be more able to decide about a wireless fence, 'cuz... :yorkiesar |
YES, congratulations on your rescues !!! But PLEASE forget about that type of confinement for your guys. It's cruel and it could effect their health as has been stated ! There are other options. Until you could put up a permanent perimeter fence, you could do a temporary. A few metal Stakes and a Roll of wire fencing would provide you with an enclosure you could supervise them in, and still let them run free (to a point). You also could do a "Run", which is a rope tied between two points and a Leash for them, looks like this... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pic...ctureid=122721 |
The shock from a electric fence hurts just put one of the collars on and try it. Because yorkies are so small it can really really hurt them and do some damage. Those kind of fences also do not keep bigger dogs and other animals that could hurt or kill your dogs out. Also people can walk right in and steal your dog or hurt them. Normally the dogs will take the shock to get something they really want but will not take the shock to get back in. |
All great answers!! I have an ex pen for mine to go potty outside otherwise at my house they are always on a leash...im more concerned about what can get them...other dogs other people hawks etc then I am about them running away...so even while in the ex pen I am outside watching them! |
