A loss for words. I was talking to my cousin on the phone. We got on the subject of our dogs. I had told her that I changed my puppy`s food to Blue Freedom puppy. She said she had never heard of it, an her vet told her that Purina is the very best food to give a dog. She told her that the plant is constantly monitored and it is the safest food for her dog. Her vet sells it. I asked her about the ingredients and told her that she should maybe give her dogs grain free. She said well my vet said to use it and that is what I am giving them. What do you say to someone like that? I realize she can feed whatever she wants, but she should try for the best. Any ideas on what to say to her? |

Well, Purina is crap. She needs to get a new vet, too, cuz that's just ridiculous. Your cousin needs to get better educated about food & nutrition. Until she does, nothing will change. It's like people who blindly follow a lousy doctor's directions because they don't know better & the doc is an authority figure. She needs to be a better advocate for her dog. |

With that said, my Miss Mini will get nothing but the best...when I eventually find it! People don't like hearing what we have to say, its like telling them how to raise kids....they don't listen until they need to. |

This is why it really irritates me when people listen to their vets about what they should and should not feed their furbabies.... Vets are for medical. Dietitians and nutritionists are for food. You don't go to your regular doctor to discuss meal plans so why would you for your vet? :/ |
The companies have reps that go in and the vets make a profit for each bag they sell, of course theyre going to recommend it. However, if the vet is that "money hungry" then she needs a new one. Theyll be the type to over charge for everything, and even if shes a regular client, wont help when really needed. |
Is she aware of what she is supporting! A company that doesn't care about dogs and that there waggin train chicken jerky killed almost 400 dogs before they pulled it also there Beneful food is killing and making dogs sick to. You can't make some body switch but you can give them all the facts and then you just have to walk away. There is NO perfect food so the fact that the vet is saying that would make me switch ASAP. |
It doesn't surprise me my best friends vet told her Purina Dog chow was the best because it has been around the longest. She didn't listen to me when I told her it wasn't either. She thinks I am crazy for spending so much on my little ones food. |
You know, I knew nothing about the dangers of Purina until I joined this forum. I thought I had done my research and made sure meat was the 1st ingredient, etc, and thought Purina One was a good food. As soon as I joined YT and saw differently, I changed the food to Blue Buffalo and have been amazed at the improvement in the health of Huey. I posted a couple of articles about foods and recalls on facebook and got quite a few responses from people like I used to be...they had no clue and thanked me for the information. We just need to continue to get this info out there. People will either be receptive or not, but we will be helping some, which is better than none! ;) |
Some people just do not listen. They eat all those processed foods. You can tell them that it is bad and still they eat it. What I would do is find out the vet. Call him and just ask him what food he recommends for a yorkie. And see what he says. If he says purina, I would ask him why. Your friend also might not be telling the full story either. She might have asked if purina was ok. Or for a cheap good food |
Vet's are taught from the get go that the big pet food companies are the best. The big pet food companies like Purina and Hills donate big bucks and products to the veternary schools. When a vet goes into business it is the big pet food companies that supply them with RX foods and they also give big perks for using their product. It is much like the pharmaceutical companies that frequent human doctor's offices selling their products. It's big money and the vet's also depend on their services. The food industry in general is a huge money making machine. Humans and animals are suffering due to a lack of education about the subject. |
Boy this makes me wonder about the food I feed Sophie Kate, she is on Hills ID (has been for almost 2 years for her Pancreatitis). I need to research if there is something else available where I will get the same results. I am leery of changing her food because we have had such good results and coming from someone who had a very sick little dog. I have had many people recommend that I cook for her but honestly Sophie Kate does not like my cooking, she turns her nose up everytime. Prefers her Hills ID. |
My sister used to argue with me about pet food- she fed her cats crap food because "they do fine on it." Eventually, because her cats were ALWAYS at the vet for one issue or another ("they're just old" she'd say,) she switched them to some really good, premium food. WOW! What a HUGE difference in her cats! They now only go to the vet for their annual checkups. Her vet is floored at how great they look and at how healthy they now are. The cats are both long hair males- one is blonde and one is black and white. Their colors are beautiful and shiny and they are SOOOO soft AND they shed SO much less! These cats, now on GREAT food, are SO healthy and young seeming now. Seriously, we were all waiting for the day when the older one was going to just not wake up, but now we can't imagine it happening any time soon. Some people just don't learn until they see first hand. My sister is now a huge advocate of premium pet food. |
Hmmmmm . . . I'll be careful here. Granted what this person is feeding their pet may or may not be right. Isn't it their life, their choice? I've leaned, the fastest way to lose a friend is to meddle in their business. Now I'll be quiet. |

Wanting the best for your friends and families is not meddling. Information and education are the best ways for others to learn. That said, some people just don't care to change. They will continue to do what is easy and not necessarily what is right. If someone does not care to learn I don't waste much time on repeating myself. I have worked in the medical field for many years where many serious conditions are actually food induced. Patients have a choice to either continue to eat in a way that will harm the body or change their diet to healthy choices. It is absolutely stunning how many choose to stay on the same path. Marketing unhealthy foods is a multimillion dollar business in the US. If people rely on the recommendations of the marketing industry in order to make choices about health and diet they are going to be gravely misled. Those cute cereal box labels and puppies on pet food bags are not the best way to decide what is inside the package. |

If it's working there is no need to change, as it is an RX Food. |

Thanks, I feel much better. I did some research last night and there are not a lot of alternatives and as I said she will not eat my cooking all the time (tried it). I read a lot of reviews about the dog food manufactures marketing dog food in their vet offices. It is true, they do that (working in Marketing I can say where else would be a better place for your market) In the case of RX foods it was very clear that Vets need to stock it since it does require the prescription and if they write the RX they need to make sure their patients can get it. I need to stop seconding guessing what works for me and Sophie Kate. All I know is I have a dog who is healthy and has no digestive problems now (knock on wood). |
It is HOW you tell her. I would just give her the information and let her come to her own conclusion. You have to tell her or you will feel like you let her down, but if you push too hard she will stop listening. Fine line good luck |
dog food You have to take charge of your dogs health. Research and get good advice even from your vet. But sad to say some vets get a kick back on the dog food they sell. I would not feed purina or evan science diet that my vet sells. Also you must decide on the flea and tick products to use. Yorkies are so delicate. My vet recommended Triflexis and I went on line and found that dogs were reacting to that. I chose revolution. So do not believe what you hear, study, read and choose the best for your precious Yorkie. |
