Microchipping
 

I am at a loss of what to do. I am getting my furbaby soon (:D) and I am strongly considering getting him microchipped during the first vet visit. It seems that most do not chip their babies until they get their neuter/spay at about 6 months.

Even though it's a big needle, many say it doesn't hurt the dog. I even check out some Youtube videos and it doesn't seem to hurt the dog, but what do I know? :confused:

I don't plan on losing my baby, but who ever really does? I live in suburbia, but as soon as he gets his shots, we are going to be out and about. I just want to protect him and give him the best chance of reuniting if anything ever happens. Especially since Yorkies are one of the top stolen dogs.

Do you all think it's a good idea to chip him right away or wait until the neuter? Does it hurt them?

I got Alfie chipped when he went for his 2nd injection at 12weeks old and he was fine didn't even let out a whimper.

I am going to ask because something tells me that they do. That would certainly make things easier for me. I'm not 100% sure yet.

Ok. that's good to know. When I talked to the vet they made it seem like it would be a horrible experience for him.

I microchip my babies ....I do it myself before they leave for their new home, and I pay for and send the paperwork in so I am certain it is done and not "forgotten" or "lost" in all the excitement of getting a new baby! I HATE NEEDLES, and when I first started doing this service, I almost died when I saw that needle....I had my vet do the microchipping for me. Not once did these pups ever even whimper! The needle used to implant the chip is sooooooooo sharp, it just glides into the skin and the babies do not even feel it! Most breeders do this for their owners.

Isn't that amazing ! All of the Dogs I've had Microchipped have breezed through it like they were being petted. Not even a turn of the head. I think "whoever" started injecting the chips in the neck area, realized that they are not as sensitive in that area, as other areas. We all know, that when a Mom disciplines a pup, that's exactly where she may give the unruly little cuss a firm nip.

What a stupid thing for a vet to say....that would be enough to put any loving mummy off having it done - they should be promoting this in every way possible, not trying to put people off :(

Harry too had his microchipping done when he had his 2nd jab - he didn't flinch, and I'm so glad I had it done, with all the horror stories we're reading.....Good luck, I'm sure it'll be absolutely fine :) Sally + Harry x

Same for my Alfie, second shot and chip on the same visit, he did do a little yip, but that was it, one second of a little discomfort and it was over. How much would he be hurting if he got out the door in a split second and lost without his Mommy, much worse. Definately chip ASAP

Mine was chipped two days after I got him (around 9 weeks) and was fine. Aside from the shock at the size of the needle (for the owner lol), it didn't seem to affect him the slightest bit.

I've probably witnessed 60 or so microchippings being done, even in chihuahua puppies, I think they were like 10 weeks or so just over 1-2 pounds.

Some flinched to be totally honest, when theI beedle entered, a couple yelped but in all honesty the older style clicker gun was used and I think the click scared them more than anything.

One puppy slept through the entire thing not even responding.

I say better safe than sorry, at least a microchip has the chance of getting scanned.

In some cases microchips were used as the only form of legal proof of positive identification and thua ownership (stolen found dog cases).

My Boy P.J. Sebastian was inplanted at 17 weeks. Best money ever I expect to waste!

Well, these pups gets their tails docked so a little fat needle is NOTHING compared to that. I have a yorkie that is micro chipped. He was not my dog at the time this was done. I have had him for about a month and a half and he's a year old. I think a fence is the first line of defense. One where he can't squeeze his little body thru. I'm kinda grossed out at feeling his microchip, however I know it's a good thing for my baby boy to have. Just KNOW you'll be feeling it when rubbing his body or neck, (where ever it is that you decide, or the vet decides...to put it). I'm grateful for it....but grossed out lol :) Here's a couple of trains of thoughts: 1. He's so young and unaware, do it as young as possible. 2. He's already going thru so many toxins with his shots that you should wait for when his body is stronger when the shots lessen. I mean...there are other thought processes over this subject matter but those are the two that came to mind for me over all the years that I'd had puppies. I have had VERY MANY puppies over my "doggy career" lol. I think it mostly depends on how well you know your baby and what's best for that individual dog. My dogs have never been treated the same at a vet because each one was unique in what they could handle. I used to have a pack (5) when I lived in the country side... In fact one of them was not at all able to take a rabies shot (after his first initial one) for the rest of his life as it made him very lethargic. So, consider your baby and how tough or tender he is and decide from there... :)

I would just get it when you get his shots

I didn't get Gracie chipped until she was spayed when she was a year old but I didn't really take her out and about a lot. If you have any concerns abut losing your pup then it is safer to get it done sooner. Gracie was a little thing even at a year old. It was kind of weird feeling the chip in her skin at first. It didn't bother her though. Now that she has gained a little more weight I can't find the chip as easily.
