No, this will be my first :) and I doubt my last! I have been researching them for over 3 years. So I know a lot, not all, but a lot. I am long overdue for my little fur kid, but it is right on time. I have had several dogs since I was younger. Sorry to hear about your dogs passing. |

I checked on the MSDS and it asked for more info. Reading the label it says to take internally as a laxitive. I know when I asked my vet tech about it she smiled and said "well I wouldn't use that" LOL and suggested a artificial tears product instead. I just wish someone could tell me that they use this or don't use this and what the reasoning is. Just makes me wonder. I certainly don't want to use mineral oil if it will cause any pain to Sophie. |

When in doubt leave it out. I read over that article more, I'm guessing they assume people use harsh chemical dog shampoos including flea control super harsh chemical shampoos and they are using the mineral oil as a coating for the eye itself to prevent the amount of possible chemical burn. Ridiculousness. Try some Yorkie Splash and Shine grooming products they are a favorite here. Some use Minksheen as it is a natural parasite detourent-it bothers me it is made by killing minks. Many like Pek or Chris Christensen etc etc etc, just ask here about grooming products you'll get loads of opinions-just double check who's advice you follow and it is a Yorkie friendly products-for dogs with hair and not fur as well a sensitive formula. Many use baby shampoo on puppies specifically for it's gentleness and tear free properties...not all baby shampoos are created equal many contain harsh chemicals. Personally we use Wen by Chaz Dean here it's easier for me to use the same product on everyone and we love it will never use anything else on myself, kids or dogs. If I was to use Wen on a puppy I'd use the lavendar formulation or the new Wen for Kids which is only currently avalible through QVC...otherwise you order it through Guthy Ranker-or eBay a little bit to just try it and not fully commit. It seems expensive but its the only product we use here period so the price per bottle of cleansing condition saves us a ton of $ actually. My Mini Schnauzer does best with pomegranate wen. |

[QUOTE=concretegurl;4116895] Cotton balls to keep water out of his ears and to clean the eye mucous" I don't agree with any of this personally, Actually, I have used cotton in the ears of my schnauzers and even though the cotton gets wet, water doesn't run into their ear canal and they don't react so harshly when they are bathed. I think it's easier on them. My groomer taught me to do that. It really works pretty well. |
No way would I put mineral oil in my pup's eye! Is it sterile? Is the applicator/dropper sterile? How do you plan to keep them so? Seems like an eye infection waiting to happen! As a 30+ year contact lense wearer myself, I know the importance of using extreme caution about what you put in your eyes. With any advice/opinions about what to do with your pup, must have products to use on them, best food to feed, etc., you need to make sure you don't take a few opinions as gospel. Do your own research and most important of all...ask your vet! |
I used to use mineral oil in the eye as groomers all used to recommend it I guess back in the day maybe when tearless shampoos weren't as effective or something. I finally stopped using it with Tibbe a while back as I just worried I could hurt his eye using that eye dropper, as he moved one time while I was dropping a drop in and I think it did touch the surface but thank goodness, he got no eye injury or problem but that was enough for me. Stopped then. Besides, I have long used tearless dog shampoo anyway. But as for the sterility of mineral oil, I don't know if all of it is sterile but some brands say they are. Plus, we know the water that we rinse the dog in isn't sterile and it gets in their eyes much of the time, as does some of the shampoo lather with those less cautious or if the dog moves, shakes it down into his eyes. Still, while I never had any problems with using mineral oil, it is good to know about the MSDS information. Between that information and the fear of the eye dropper scratching the cornea, no more mineral oil for us. Never a day here I don't learn something. |

I've has really great luck using raw cold pressed coconut oil as an ear rub, my girl she used to get yeast in her ears a lot. I wouldn't knock anyone for using cotton balls seems prefferencial if it works they it works. I have a weird phobia of cotton balls I have Derik remove it from vitamin bottles and such for me-strange I know it just freaks me out, refuse the twisted cotton at dds too. |

All very interesting comments. I'm glad to hear that the use of mineral oil is not supported. That really eases my mind as I really didn't want to use it. Check! As for the cotton balls, my mini schnauzer's ears do get plucked and because they are big enough (Hansel weighs about 17 lbs.) it's not difficult to put a little cotton ball in his ears. Keeps him happy and so I'm happy, as I do bathe him at home between grooming. I certainly recognize all of this is moot as I don't even have Princess Sophie home with us yet. I will give it a try but I fully expect I may be less than successful on such a small pup. Thanks everyone for your interest and input. I always learn new things here and that's always a good thing!!:) |
I also thought about using cotton balls, but I don't think its practical in pups. I am going to put the ear powder after baths. |
I usually use a small washcloth with mild shampoo for the face. I don't think I would put anything in my dog's eyes. |
My first breeder recommended that I use mineral oil, but my vet recommended that I use an opthalmic ointment that he had already prescribed for my little one. I haven't used it with Katie and am just very careful around her eyes. |
