trimming bottom HELP I need to trim Chloe's rear so nothing gets caught up in the hair  The last time I took her somewhere and they did it. How do I do this best? She is very squirmy, hates the sound of a trimmer and won't be still so I can use scissors. I need help please |
Take her to a groomer for the first few times, stay and watch but let them handle her. If you go just for a bottom trim its like usually 10-15. |
Maybe get someone to hold her, her face to them and her bottom to you and use an electric trimmer. Maybe invest in a "quiet" trimmer. There are some very quiet ones on the market. You could even ask a groomer which ones are the best. |
I am not an expert but you could try having a trimmer running near to you when you are playing and training and giving treats, don't touch her with it just let her get used to the sound while you are playing. Make sure when she is snuggling that you touch her all over, feet, ears, face, belly and bum, get others who are in your family or friends to do the same so that she gets comfortable with touching all over. Then you can start to use the clippers but go slow. In the meantime a good shampoo up in that area can be very effective, I recently had to get my grandsons puppy in the sink to clean off dried poop so that she could get fresh poop out. Not the most pleasant job but it didn't take long and poor baby pooped before I got her out of the sink she was so relieved. Also my Alfie's pee pointer hairs get very gloopy because he has to wear a medical cone and can't clean himself. The necessary but least sweet of being the best mom to your little sweetheart. |
First, you need to get some Wahl P'NUT trimmers...they are small, about 4 inches long, fit in yoiur hand, and they are very quiet. Next, like suggested above, take her to a pro and let them show you how to safely do this...if you EVER get her rectum caught in those clippers, believe SHE wont ever forget it!! and then finally, until YOU become a "pro" doing this, you will do best with someone to hold her for you as you trim! |
My breeder suggest the wahl pnut too have it in pink! I use I think its the #3same or #4 guard on the bottom...I think I actually have an andis guard I used last time...definately if you DIY make sure the hair is knot free & use a guard at first, even pulled on bottom hair will result in a negative association. |
........and place the trimmer at the rectum, and then cut AWAY from that precious little A-hole....DO NOT EVER RUN THE CLIPPERS OVER THE RECTUM!! |
Thank you all so much. I will invest in some of the Wahl trimmers you recommend. |
I realise this goes against what everyone else is saying.....:D But when Harry's botty needs a trim, I get Andy to hold him, then use the round-ended baby scissors around his little bits and pieces....he's 2 years old now and doesn't mind it at all....good luck! :) Sally + Harry x |
Great info thanks. |

The Wahl Peanut trimmers are great. You can trim their hair under the paws, do sanitary trims & tip ears. When you're trimming her behind, make sure to hold her tail up by holding the fleshy top part (this won't hurt them), this will prevent her from wiggling her butt. Groomers call the patch of hair under their butt hole the 'runway', do not cut this hair, or you'll end up w/a baboon butt! |

I am laughing about the baboon butt, because no one ever told me not to clip there and I always do and, yes, Huey always has a baboon butt! I never thought about it before, but that is what it looks like  It doesn't get shooshoo on it, though! :D:D |
