when to microchip
 
my vet says that my 10 week old puppy is old enough to be chippe, her partner says wait . He was 1.6 lbs at the last vet check 2 weeks ago. also has anyone heard of implantable gps locators.

I chip my babies at 12-14 weeks, when they go to their new homes. Do not have any working knowledge of the implantable gps locator.

the one who wanted to wait said the chip can migrate. Any problems with this. my 3 year old is chipped and has no issues that I know of.

My Boy was 16 weeks old when I got him and exactly a week later h was chipped. We all feel much better now.;)

I'm really hoping they come out with a gps chip soon. I have been holding off because I know when I get Huey chipped, they will release a gps tracker chip the next day...i know they have gps tracker collars, but Huey doesn't wear a collar. For some reason, I have images of him getting hung and choking to death.

The gps for the collars are imo useless. All you need to do is remove the battery or take it off to deactivate it. plus the majority of them are bigger than our babies. The chip helps with identifing the pup but only if a person is honest and tries to find the owner. The implantable gps would be the ultimate safety device. I just can't locate anyone who does it.

Chips can migrate at any age....I chipped an older pet, and it migrated around to the side of the neck....it is no big deal....the scanners can read the chips if you get within 3 feet of the dog, regardless of where the chip is....

We had Katie Scarlett microchipped when she went in for her spay surgery at 6 months.

I would definitely get him microchipped when you neuter him. I've seen the needle that they implant with, and it can be done while they are awake... But you might as well do it while he's asleep for his neuter.
