Not sure what to do So....Angelo is a weirdo. He will only eat or drink if I sit by him and give him the food or water. I just got back from work and nothing has been touched but when I give him the food and water, u can tell how hungry he is. What do I do? |
Has he always been like this? He will eat when he is hungry. |
Yogi seems to think it's a race in the morning to eat as much as he can before we leave for work. My kids eat very little during the day when no one is home, either. But after greeting us when we return and a little play they will nearly always go eat something. |

My dogs have never seemed to eat or drink much, if at all, while I've been away over a lifetime of having dogs, as I think they slept most of the time I'm gone. Unless your dog is ill and needs food or water every few hours, I'd let him set his own intake schedule. If he gets hungry and thirsty enough, he will eventually eat, drink enough to keep from starving, thirsting, etc. If you have to be gone overnight or in the hospital in an emergency, as I have once or twice, I found my dog at the time was probably upset by the change in the daily schedule and from the uncertainty of what was going on, didn't eat or drink a lot but it was obvious he did take enough to get him by. Plus, he peed/pooped on the pee pads, something he normally will never do no matter how long I'm gone during the day, saving it for when he can go outside. So unless your dog is old, senile, ill, I would let him do what he likes unless he's losing a lot of weight or getting sick from it. |
Can you get a sitter or a neighbor to check on him midday and sit with him while he eats? (at least until he is 12 weeks old) If not, I would make sure to feed him right before I left for work, and as soon as I got home. Maybe try a treat ball. Is he responsive to your voice? Call him at lunch time and talk to him....(leave him a message, lol) Maybe he'll eat if he hears your voice?? |
Oh, I did not know the dog was a puppy as I didn't see an age mentioned. I was talking about an adult dog in my post. Please do follow others advice on how often puppies should eat, drink, etc., as that is a great concern for very tiny puppies and a concern in the normal-sized pups. |
I made the mistake of putting Brandi's pill in her regular food (big no, no)and I accidentally turn her into a picker eater. To get her to start eating her food again, I hid treats in her regular food and now she eating like normal again. Someone on here suggested I do this to get her to start eating again. YT is awesome because I didn't know what to do. Each day, I fed her less of the treats and more of her regular food. She doesn't even realized that her food doesn't have anymore treats hidden in it. |

Both of mine even if we are not in the room with the room they will go get a mouth full spit it in the floor at our feet of whatever room we are in then eat each piece. |
yes... my "pack" of three is the same. I feed homecooked food in the pm..and have kibble out. For the most part they eat when I am around. Sammy will run to the bowl to eat after greeting me at the door ..silly boy. Maybe add a little something to the food in the morining..like parm cheese or chicken broth? Also.. remember she is a baby and this too will pass and you will not always have to hand feed her at lunch time. You are lucky you can even go home ! |
