A-ha! Here's some food for thought:

Roxy suffered some trauma from shipping (she just freaked out). That made her lose her hair. It's not like it came out in clumps, you could hardly notice her losing it, really. If your Yorkie went through an injury, it may have been the associated stress. Roxy has a really silky coat and the thinness was very noticable. She's growing back her coat, but very gradually.

I hope that helps.. Otherwise, we just have two unique, adorable yorkies!!!!

Now isn't THAT a coincidence? Wosie did not lose her coat, though... but maybe trauma slows the growth? I dunno... I think her coat has always been a bit thin, but I appreciate your input very much! Roxy is a doll, by the way! :p

Here is one of Keekee - 6 months old. She is in oil here. :cool: Not only breeding can interfere with the coat - food can play a part too.

That's a great point. We do OK in the food area and she also gets Missing Link every meal. I truly think she is what she is, but I love her just the same! I am really looking forward to the coat changes the next 6 months brings. But here's a question for y'all... Her broken leg is shaved, and she has so much silver growing there, and the fur is sooooo soft and shiny! I am wondering, do you all think I should shave her whole body? What's going to happen there with one shaved side? Here's a picture after surgery. Oh geez, I had forgotten how sad she looked that day, poor little thing!

This is really an interesting thread - What other breed has so many different looks ...I NEVER get tired of looking at yorkies and I just love the uniqueness of the breed - Terrier or Baby faced ....mixed or not mixed - they are just so FREAKIN CUTE with personalities to match.

And Michelle - that was Chanel with her Eatin Face on :) - she STILL gives me that look when she's trying to look her very cutest for a bite of MY food...I love that she looks like Bailey -

we just cant resist these little faces can we ?....and believe me - it doesn't stop when they aren't a puppy anymore - Yorkies carry their cuteness thru their WHOLE life cycle

Awe, poor Wosie in that picture. I think she is very cute :) . As far as shaving goes you will need to be very careful with how cold it is where you live and make sure she is warm all the time and doesn't catch a chill. I would be tempted also. There was a girl on here who took her Yorkie to be groomed and they practically shaved the whole body...she was sooooo upset. However, she was going to deal with it and have her Yorkie wear sweaters. If you want to shave, I'd look into some warm clothing for her. When I need a quick sweater, I start cutting sleeves off of things that I feel will fit the body (wrist area goes around the neck)...works in a pinch! :cool:

NO! Don't shave her! Let her keep that fluffy puppy coat as long as possible! :)

When I told my husband that I had asked you guys about shaving her, he said "no way! :eek: It's winter, girl! What are you THINKING??" lolol Of COURSE I would not think of doing it until it warmed up, but I would love to see her have an even coat someday.

One thing at a time! Gotta let the poor girl heal first! We brought Wosie to the surgeon this morning for her followup, and Dr. Lew said she is healing quite nicely, is not favoring her leg, and has a full range of motion. We have to bring her back for xrays in 2 weeks, and after that, she can start short leashed walks. YIPPEE! She's about to BURST from all the retained energy, lol. :aimeeyork

So glad to hear the GREAT news!!!!!! :thumbup: :thumbup: My neighbor's Schnauzer had surgery not that long ago and they shaved the area. Once the hair grew out a couple of inches she took him and had him groomed for the hair to match up a little more. By the 2nd grooming Sunny was all even coated. That hair will grow back quicker than you know and Wosie will look adorable during the process! ;)

What does that mean, "In Oil here?" Is there somehting that I am not doing that I should? My yorkie has thin fine dry feeling hair. Something I should be doing?!!

LOL! I thought it meant that she had oil on her dogs coat, like what some people do with their dogs coat when they show it...or something like that. I think I remember reading on here that people who show have to do that to keep their dogs hair in good shape...now I'm wondering too, LOL! :)

I am so sorry - In oil here, means that I have oiled her coat. :D I just like to tell people that if the picture was taken after the bath so they know why the coat looks so oily.
After I bath my dogs I add a teaspoon of mineral oil to their bath water and rinse it over their coats. I then do a final rinse with regular water and then blow dry them. This helps their coats to avoid any breakage. I do this since I show my dogs and need their coats to be long. When they get older around 1 year - their coats may be ready for wraps. This depends on the type of coat they have. As you can see KeeKee coats is really nice and long. She is a great grower with her coat, but I think the oil helps a lot too.
I was told many years ago that carpet, fabric furniture, and especially the grass can cut their coats. Have you ever seen a grass blade up close? It looks like a knife. So I do not let my dogs in the grass much. :eek: We have a very large wooden porch for them to enjoy the outdoors and they have the inside of the house to play in too. :animal36

I forgot to add - some yorkies will never have long hair, because they have the terrier coat. The terrier coat just won't grow long much no matter what you do to it. The terrier coat is rough feeling. It will feel like a short hair dogs coat, such as corgi. The right food and oiling the coat sometimes helps a little with this coat, but most of the time not.

I am very excited to learn about this 'oiling'. My Mari has a coat that seems dry. I am definately going to try this. Also, what do you feed your yorkies? Also, again, I have to say that I love the picture with 'stary night' and your pup!! That picture was one of my daughters favorite paintings!! I look at it now and it hurts my heart, sad, yet wonderful feelings.

I am so sorry the picture hurts your feelings - Butterfly. Not meant to. This is my daughter's (now 23) favorite painting. So when we were searching to come up with our new kennel line (since two others had my original name from the 70's - we did not want people to get us mixed up with them, not knowing their breeding policies and all) we decided on Vangogh. :p
I feed my babies Natures Recipe. They love it and it seems to work well for them.

Oh, no I am sorry....It hurts but in a good way. See my Sarah, our only child was murdered by her boyfriend two years ago. It was her favorite painting and she had the poster up in her room. Coinsicence...Sarah would be 23 also. She was a month prior to her 21st bday when he decided to take her life then his!!! Soory to ramble... it's a hard time of year. Cathe
