Male or female??? I am looking to add another Yorkie to our family soon. My question is we have Kia who just turned 1 early January, she is going to get taken care but wondering what meshes better? Another female or male? I am having a hard decision on this? Kia is great Yorkie, loves everyone and anybody that walks through the door. Thanks for any input that you have. |
Well, I am not sure if I am the best to answer this, but I will tell you our experience. I have a Yorkie named Katie Scarlett. My Mom has a Maltese, named Mollie. They are about a year apart in age and they ADORE each other! They play so good together and love on one another. So in our case, 2 girls have been the perfect match. But now, Katie Scarlett is a very social dog. She loves when our buddy, Killer, a boy Chihuahua, comes over to visit. But Mollie won't have anything to do with Killer. |
I have a 6 month female who is very social. She loves people and any dogs that will play! I would choose another female if it was my decision. I am actually thinking about getting a female puppy in the future for her to play with since our male doesn't like to play, much! |
Our Ziva was two when we bought Abby home. She was already possessive so I was expecting a hard transition. It did take a full month before she accepted the puppy. Abby was a sweet easygoing dog- I had picked her specially for these traits (not her looks!). The two dogs do everything together but are not lovey-dovey. It made Ziva a better dog and Abby (now at 18 months)is trying to assert her place. Everyone told me to get a male but I really couldn't do it- I have only had females. I think personality is important too. |
Honestly, I think it totally depends on the personality of the individual dog. I have one of each and they get along great. My mother and grandmother always had multiple female dogs (they worried about leg lifting) and never had any problems at all. |
Thanks for replies. That's what I was leaning towards is another female. But figuring my Kia is not fixed yet, thought they would fight trying to be the dominator, then changed my mind to a male but was thinking of the whole lifting leg thing. Hoping to get Kia in the next couple weeks to get spayed also. She gets along great with our 9 month old black lab. She thinks she's a big dog in a little body!! Big decisions!! Been racking my brain for about a month. Going back and forth. |
If Kia isn't fixed yet, you definitely don't want a boy AND your concern about fighting for dominance is a valid concern with another female. I would definitely get your current girl fixed first in any case. Happy hunting..I think it is a matter of personalities and not gender, though. My male and female get a long just great :) |
Thanks, I don't plan on getting another one until after she is fixed this next couple weeks. Let her heal and then go forward. Thanks |
It's so exciting to be on the hunt for another one. Hope you will keep us posted :D I live vicariously through you all because it's just not in the cards for me to get another quite yet. |
