Separation Anxiety and Training So....I have really been enjoying my new puppy. He doesn't eat much tho and I dnt no what to do. He pees a lot in the house and I need to get him trained ASAP. I found a trainer who speaks English pretty well but still has trouble understanding everything I say. She asked what I need her to train him to do and all I know is I want him potty trained. What else do I need to train him to do? I need to be exact cuz of the language barrier. Also he would be there for 6-9 weeks...is that too long to b away from him? Will he forget me? He's only a baby...help me YT plz |
I wouldn't do that except as a last resort. Could you get a trainer to come to you, or a class? Potty training has a lot to do with routine and age. ... I am sure a lot of the members on here can give you advise that will help. I used a plat pen and potty pads when mine were that little. Good luck |
Every time your baby goes through change, like being taken away from their littermates, or moved to a new home, it causes them stress. It's an adjustment and it's very hard on them especially puppies and young dogs. It is the best time for them to get sick. I wouldn't let a trainer take my puppy I would prefer someone come to me. That way you can learn too. For potty training, can you get a puppy playpen so they are not running all over the house? Like lil sis said, consistency is key. Set a routine, and stick to it. Do things the same way every time. There are lots of great threads on here about potty training too. |

I agree with everyone else. Consistency is key. When Bentley was very young we used a playpen for potty training. We would take him out and if he pottied, we would let him stay out of his playpen for 30 minutes of playtime. Then back to his playpen for about 15-30 minutes (in our living room with us of course), then back outside again. This lasted for a few days. They learn so quickly. He figured out that if he went potty outside, he could have playtime. Lots and lots of jumping and excited yelling when he went potty too :) I personally wouldn't haven't have felt comfortable letting a trainer take him for that long. They are so sensitive to things and she could very well regress once he is returned to you. Anytime we make a move (military) it seems to take a while for Bentley to settle and be his normal well mannered self again :) and he's 2. Consistency, time, and patience :) |
Certainly you need to potty train him. Any changes do throw them off. They are creatures of habit. It takes months to potty train a small breed puppy. Being consistent is the best policy for dog training. Since he is young you need to know that it is going to be a while before he can even control his bladder and bowel functions. He can't be allowed to wander far from his potty or he will have accidents. It's just how puppies are made. Do you have an X-pen for him for when you can't watch him? |

I wouldn't let anyone train my dog in their home. I won't even let them train in my home without me being there. You just have to be very careful about trainers because they may be hiting your dog and you do not know about it and not like your dog is able to tell you about it. There is no shortcut to train a dog. It takes time to learn. Be patient and consistent. |
