I got a three legged yorkie now. Don't worry Mr. Hankey has all his legs. I have noticed when he is in the backyard running he runs on 3 legs. He picks up his RR leg as he is running and holds it close to his body while he runs. He only does this in the back yard and no where else. His legs are fine and the vet says he is ok and that he is probably peeing and running at the same time. Has anyone else seen there yorkie do this |
I have seen it in other Yorkies and it has to do with LP, not peeing on the run!!! It may be JUST the start of a bad leg.... |
My poodle does this. He has arthritis. I would give him glucosamine. I use CoseQuin DS plus msm. You can PM if you have any questions :) |
Macy does this sometimes. She has had x rays and 2 vets look at her and they can't find an indication of LP. One vet suggested it may be a habit. I don't let her jump off of any furniture and go up or down steps. I started her in agility when she was a little over a year old and wonder if I didn't hurt her legs in some way. |
I have one who occasionally does this when his LP is fired up. But, since its only occasional, my vet wants to wait on surgery. |
I believe I would get a second vet opinion using those films already taken plus the consulting vet may want to take a new view for comparison, plus a view of the other leg for comparison, just in case that vet missed something and to be sure there is nothing really there. Doctors and vets miss things - they do. Since the only way dogs can usually "talk" to us when something is wrong is by behavior, any significant change in behavior or off behavior should be checked out when it is different enough or repetitive, etc. If there is something going on with his back, hip or leg, catching it early could prevent a lot of pain and suffering. And for a dog to start holding up one leg outside is just odd and not typical. |
I would get a second opinion because it sounds like Luxating Patella or something else. You might want to just go to a specialist, an orthopedic specialist could probably feel around his leg and tell you what the problem is. Normally when a dog is not using there leg it means it hurts and dogs are very good at hiding pain. |

If your vet is not real familiar with Yorkie issues he may not know to look for LP. Hopefully you can find someone else that can check it out. LP only gets worse as they age. |
I've had two that did that and both had LP. There is a hip disease called Perthes that can cause that reaction as well. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease I would take him to an orthopedic Vet. and have him checked out. |
My little girl has the same problem with her back right leg. She has a hop, skip or jump to her fast walk. Took her to the vets office and ladies not vet that work there said not to worry about it. Strange????? I'm still concerned about her walk. They said vet will tell me the same thing, just to keep a close eye on her and watch her for changes. She's not limping, jumping and running as usual. Shows no pain, which I know means nothing. But now what. Ladies at vets office said xray and vet appointment to expensive for no real answers but to wait and watch her. Now what??? |
If he's peeing as he runs, I had a Schnauzer (Gretel) who peed with one back let up. I thought it was because she really hated getting her feet wet. My brother had a three legged dog who lost one leg in a combine accident. Very sad but my brother just started calling her Tripod and she came to it. Great farm dog!! |
The vet said it could be LP in its beginning phases but since Mr. Hankey Bly does it in are backyard running and no other time when he runs it is possibly just something he does and there is nothing wrong. But he wants to check him out again in six months to see how he is doing and go from there so we will see what happens |
I would have an x ray done any Yorkie we have had in rescue has either had luxatining patella or legg perthes when we see this.. |
The same thing happened to Rosie. She started to hold back her back leg. I took her to the vet several times telling the vet there was something wrong but she told me not to worry. After it got worst I insisted there was something wrong and they told me it was lap but after she got xray they found out it was fho. She needed surgery asap to prevent arthritis later on |
