Slow feed bowl vs treat puzzles I use slow feed bowl for Jada and Bogie because they inhale their kibble. I have the ones with the three bumps in the middle of the bowl. It slows them down a bit but not enough. I am currently researching and trying to find something different. I have narrowed it down to these...what is your opinion on which would be best. Those look like they may be really frustrating and too difficult for regular meals. Max used to inhale his food and I sometimes used the bowl that you currently have. It didn't slow him down all that much either. We used a pacer ball. It's a ball you put in the middle of the dish and he has to eat around it. You could really use anything for the ball. My boy likes the Smarter Toys - 5-inch IQ Treat Ball Dog Toy (also on Amazon.com - for 7.50). I took the plastic insert out. I mainly use it for treats - he will roll it around for an hour or so until he can get the treat out. Some times he will unscrew the top from the bottom to get the treat - Max is gifted, right? |
Callie loves doggy puzzles we have like 6 or 7 maybe more not sure. I think the Ethical Pet Seek-A-Treat Shuffle Bone Dog Puzzle is a good first doggy puzzle we have that one and its great. Rocks! I use a rock for Mylee. We use rocks for the same problem with horses in thier feed pans and they work great for dogs too. A large smooth rock. It's heavy enough she can't just move it out of the way with her nose and big enough obviously she can't accidentially bite it. But effective. It might be something you could try before you spend money. I did like the first interactive toy you had listed too. I thougt that one looked interesting. |
I like the Kong Wobbler. It's not TOO difficult but still stimulating enough. You just have to push it, and food falls out of the hole. We've used this one before (friends dogs we watch sometimes have this): Amazon.com: Company of Animals Nina Ottosson Dog... and the problem is, Jackson likes to try and eat the plastic pieces after he eats his food, lol... He picks them up and starts chewing on them... but if your dogs dont usually eat plastic, it's good!I really am for using these kinds of toys though (even for meals). It tires them out mentally! |
I like the last one. I was looking into these for Joel, not because he eats fast but to get him to eat more. I wonder if he would be more interested in eating from that. He would definetly eat the plastic pieces on that second one, lol |
Sugar ate out of the Buddy Twist and Treat (like Jada has) for 2 years before I began home cooking. Every meal was out of the treat ball. She still loves it to this day :D |

Our treat puzzle came today and I set it up for Max to play with. Lets just say it's a good thing I don't use it to feed him because he would starve! He sniffed around but couldn't figure it out and decided to lay down next to it and cry. Cooper walked right over and got all the treats out in under a minute. Michelle, did you try anything for your 2? |
Tibbe loves puzzles and a way to work for his food. He will work for an hour at a puzzle to finish it off. They are so cheap, if I could, I'd get one of each and alternate each of them to keep them interested. It is an awesome way to inspire the very active, curious and tenacious dog. |

I did get worried and went back and cancelled the Paw Hide Treat Toy for now. Got a little afraid he couldn't pop those yellow things. So for now just getting that Shuffle Bone Puzzle. Tibbe is only 5.3 lbs. and that Paw Hide one might be a little much for him. Due around January 28th. |
