Any ideas/suggestions please? :) Andy (my husband) has to have quite major surgery in 4 weeks time :( What I'm worrying about is when he gets back home....Harry adores his daddy and uses his tummy as his own personal cushion, plus all the jumping and playing on him. He'll be recuperating for about 6 weeks - apart from keeping them totally apart (impossible) can anyone think of how I can keep Andy's tummy protected (sort of from the bottom of the ribs down to the groin) please? :) The only thing I can think of is a load of pillows, maybe with one of those tables over the top like they have in hospital? Any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated! :D Sally + Harry x |
I'm sorry to hear about your DH and wishing him a speedy recovery. I understand your worry too. Don't underestimate Harry. I think they know more about what's going on than we give them credit for. I think he'll know Andy isn't his normal self and although he'll be curious about that I think he'll be more mellow than his normal self too. Just a prediction. :) |
agreed. when jason came home from surgery for the first few days we didnt have the kids in the room with him. but after a couple of days cedric sleep with him all day everyday and was a very good boy. but i was thinking and dont laugh...what about a big box and cut it out around hubbys body and you can place it over him as protection for that area. idk why i thought that it just came out.. haha. |
ps prayers and thoughts for a safe procedure and speedy full recovery. |
Surely they have something to fill that bill but if you can't find it, afford it, etc., what about a cardboard box with a cutout for the chest and hips placed over his torso, kind of like a tunnel over a train track, for when Harry is in the room off leash. Otherwise, without any protective covering over his abdomen, I would keep Harry leashed as your Andy couldn't take Harry landing in the middle of his abdomen. In the Medical Equipment stores, they likely have something far more adequate for this purpose for burn patients and post-op torso surgery patients as so many people have pets and small children and live alone and have to allow their little one some freedom without constant restraint etc., in the house. I missed that Andy was having surgery until you mentioned it in that other thread I saw earlier today. Sally, I am so sorry to hear about this and you know I will be praying and thinking about you all until he is well again. It sounds quite serious and I hope and pray you are going to have some help getting you two through this. Hugs from Texas. |

If your Med Equip stores don't have anything, buy some plaster strips or the more expensive fiberglass strips and find something that will fit over his midsection and make a cast over the underlying structure that you can then strip away and have a kind of abdominal cast that well-clears his torso but is hard and in the case of the fiberglass, waterproof. When I used to apply casts, I would often practice making them using all kinds of structures, etc., to get down some of the technique before I started practicing on actual people around the house here or the office. For a time, all my friends and coworkers totally avoided me! |
At Walmart or one of the big-box stores or container stores, find a plastic container, storage container, trash can, etc., wide and tall enough to clear his torso, take it home and cut out an area to allow it to fit over his abdomen large enough to well clear it. Sand or otherwise soften the sharp or roughness off the cut edges. There are big plastic containers haha that can go over even big bellies if they have a large enough cutout at each end. Maybe one of those see-through plastic ones that appear kind of whitish? |
:) Thank you Jeanie - we've got his pre-op assessment tomorrow morning so I'll speak to the staff at the hospital then - he obviously isn't the first person ever to have to deal with this.... We only got the letter yesterday, so I've been worrying/panicking about it since then....thank you all for your brilliant suggestions! :) Sally + Harry x |
If nothing else I guess you could use a breakfast tray as the aristocracy use and make Andy feel blueblooded! |

This is what I was going to suggest....mine do NOT like the sound/feel of foil under their feet, so they stay completely away from anyplace I have it! I have it around the bottom of my pot plants outside on the patio, as they were all jumping up into my pot plants and digging all the dirt out! Not a problem any more....I even put it across the top back of the recliners and the sofa, to keep those goats from climbing up onto the back of the recliner and the sofa......to fall and break their necks! The first time Beaucephus (Rosehill's Charmin Beaucephus) jumped onto the back of the recliner, and landed in the middle of the foil, he did a triple reverse angle back flip, added a 180* cut away, embellished with a 360* back rotation, finishing up with a quad sit spin complete with a reverse back out! He has never jumped up on the back of the recliner again! |

One of those generic tempurpedic or visco foam 'body pillows' and a tv tray. You might want to consider wearing pants with loops and actually leashing Harry to you...kind of dramic though. I'd suggest height items but Harry is a big boy like Elvis and short if keeping hubby on stilts, chairs with a lattee or locked away in a room-we all know hubby and not Harry would be shut away lol yeah baracades of function for sure. If hubby has to be on bed rest do you have the option of renting a hospital bed with high rails? |
