A padded baseball catcher chest protector? If they can stop a baseball, they should stop a yorkie! :DThey even have the flap that covers the privates. I saw some on amazon <$40. |
Four weeks may be just enough time to train your pup to lay on a new pillow/bed next to your DH. Years ago when my mother had major surgery we were a little concerned about the family Yorkie at the time jumping on her (she was a proud teapot at 16 pounds). Funny thing about dogs, they just seem to know sometimes. Jackie would not jump up on the bed without permission (she never waited before) and would lay on one of our shirts we put on the foot of the bed or next to my mom. Is is any wonder having dogs makes us healthier people. Best wishes to your DH on the surgery - will keep him in our thoughts. |
Prayers for an easy recovery. |
:) So, a quick up-date! I spoke to the Consultant's assistant about my fears/worries....and they looked at me like I was totally nuts!!! :D I've arranged though to bring home one of those hospital-bed-tables (which I shall bleach and disinfect within an inch of it's life!!!) when I bring Andy home, which I shall cover in foil (brilliant idea!). At least that can be made higher or lower depending on where Andy is. I loved the pretend pregnancy tummy....unfortunately he didn't - his face sort of froze....:D I really think there's a market for this kind of thing, all you entrepreneurs out there....;) What I'd also like to say is a great big thank you for all your brilliant suggestions, all the thought you've put into it....and for all the wonderful, caring, warm wishes :) Sally + Harry x (+ Andy!) |
Oh, come on, Andy, put on that big fake pregnancy belly, especially right before the fellows visit you and hang out to help keep up your spirits!!! All kidding aside, once again I wonder why medicine can't get ahead of this problem and medical equipment people make a protective, strong, torso-tent of something stable enough to protect the abdomen or chest from toddlers and pets for the post-op patient with a fresh incision and sometimes a drain-tube! Lots of surgery patients would rent it or buy it or whatever to keep the dog from landing slap dab right on the incision when you've dozed off and your caregiver has stepped from the room! |
I have nothing to add to the great suggestions given already... but I'll be praying for Andy and you and Harry.. |

Sally I can't imagine anyone thinking you are nuts! :p. Glad you figure something out! Hope Andy pulls through the surgery and is back to putting up with you ;) in no time. |
Sally, we will be thinking of your husband and you, praying for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. I'm glad you were able to arrange for the table. That will be very useful and protective. I also agree with everyone who says Harry will likely know what's up and go easy on your husband. We had a recent experience in which my boys amazed me how intuitive they were, and how accepting they were, and how they behaved in such a helpful way. Dogs are so smart. :) |

Sally, I do think the hospital tray table will help, and Andy may be able to use it as a 'brace' and 'walker' to help stabilize him right at first, too. I did that in the hospital in '83 when I had both feet operated on. The surgery, plus the meds, can make you a bit woozy and it is nice to have something a little solid feeling to hang on to as you shuffle slowly around. Oh, and those people who looked at you like you were crazy must not have ever been around any loving pet...:D I am still sending best wishes for all to go well and healing thoughts for you and Andy. :) |
Years ago when my Father had hernia surgery he used a garbage can lid to lay over his belly (we even glued Velcro straps on it. It worked great but Puddin' learned very quickly not to jump up there. |

But it'll be that one odd time that my little whirling dervish will strike - probably doing his meerkat impression on the bed, looking at the squirrels in the tree....that was the thing really worrying me. So I need something to be constantly there - just in case! :) Sally + Harry x |

I truly don't know why such a thing doesn't exist - when the snow has cleared and I can get out and about again, I'm going to go to some medical suppliers and try to find out....I'll let you know! :) Sally + Harry x |
1 Attachment(s) You know...I was thinking some more about this and wondering if one of those 'food tents' might work. All you need is a 'deterrent'...something to make Harry 'think' he cannot go there. When I really cannot have kitties jump on counters, etc., like cooking for holidays, I always put stuff on the edge where it is visible from the floor, or overhanging (cantelevered) over the edge of the counter so when they look up, they can see there is nowhere to land up there...plus, they would have to jump backwards around that edge then over and forward to the counter, and they cannot physically do that. So, since those 'picnic food tents' are lightweight weight and collapse, might be easier to store and manage. They are slope-sided and come to a point on top, which 'might' make him realize that the lap is otherwise occupied and slow him down at least long enough for someone to get control of his next move. There are also round mesh covers...I am not sure about size of these covers, however. You could still use the foil as a further deterrent. |
^^This reminds me, at the pet stores there are pads for couches that act as deterrents for pets. I think the pads have prickly things (not really harmful, just uncomfortable). |
Good thinking! :D And I suppose it could be covered with papier mache (like we used to with balloons, wait for it to thoroughly dry - then burst the balloon inside - did we all used to do that, or is it just a Sally-thing? :D) which would actually make it 'hard'? Thank you - all of you - so much! I think we're getting there!! :D Sally + Harry x |
ASK and YOU Will get ADVICE ! :D I am LMBO we are such a creative bunch of people. Some of the ideas might really work too. My boring suggestion was a pillow or lap desk from an office store. Prayers for Andy and a speedy recovery. |
Sure...papier mache would work...you could maybe even cover an umbrella, or part of it, with plastic wrap and masking or packaging tape, and papier mache over that, then fold the umbrella up after it has dried. You would just need something the right size to begin with. Even a nice big beach ball or snowman inflatable Christmas decoration and you could just let the air out. |
1 Attachment(s) Oooo...remember the "Dogloos"...the doghouse that looks like an igloo? Well, we used to have one...the huge size...we gave it away 'cuz the dog only went in there once. They came in several sizes, and are 2-piece...the dome, and the base. I don't know if they even still make them, but they were hard plastic and I don't see why a portion couldn't be sawed so it would fit over Andy's middle like a train tunnel. Oh wait...in the US they are still out there...here's a pic...(maybe I need meds...lol) |
A friend was just bugging me about getting a pregnancy belly cast made...basically paler mache of bellu...have an artists there or feeling creative? Cast Andy yourself! It'll be hard as a rock after! Maybe put a pillow in a bag over his belly then cast it and bam Harry proof tummy turtle shell! |

LOL! We are all a bunch of "fixers" aren't we? |
All set? |
Oh wow!!!!! :D It never ceases to amaze me, the thought and care of the members of YT, thank you Jeanie!!! :) Yep, Andy's been 'starving' for the past 36 hours, had his 'clearance medicine' and I'm all set to take him tomorrow morning at 6.30. I decided to order the over-bed-hospital-table thingy from Amazon, rather than use one from the hospital itself (thought that might have brought home additional problems that we just don't need!) which has arrived and been set up....and yes, Harry launched himself up onto the bed...and then ground to a halt....wooo hooo!!! He won't go near it! Even when it's not over Andy (I keep testing it) he keeps sidling past it, giving it the evil-eye.....poor unsuspecting, innocent table!!! :D Between us all, we solved the problem - and I (and Andy! :)) truly can't thank you all enough....love from all 3 of us xxx |
I will be sending positive thoughts and prayers for you and Andy. Much love from us:D |
Thank you Morgan!! :) And Harry says he can't wait for you all to come and visit one year during Wimbledon fortnight, so he and Georgie can go and jump on that nasty old table....probably giving it a big chew on the way....:D Love from the 3 of us xxx |
Still think you should have gone for the fake pregnant belly!!. Thinking about you and Andy, poor Harry having to contend with that mechanical trampoline blocker. |
