Input about age to spay...... I know others have asked this question....what age do you spay? Teeka is 6 months and 3.6 lbs. I have an appointment for her to have her spay done when she is 7 months in February. Should I wait another month or have it done? My first female, I waited until she was 8 months before I had her spay. I am thinking I should wait until she is closer to 8 months. Any input would be awesome! |
I'm going to give you the advice based on my lesson learned. I got Mandie spayed at 6 months because I had always been told to get them spayed before their first heat. Well, when I did, the vet said it was too early to tell if she would need any of her baby teeth pulled. 2 days after her spay is when I realized from the info on this forum that 8 months would've been better. By then, you will know what teeth are not going to come out on their own and you only have to put them under anesthesia once. So now I have to go get Mandie's 2 teeth pulled in a few months. UGH I say wait until 8 months old. |

With my first Girl, I waited until she was 8 months. I was going to get her spayed earlier but I was told by the vet to let her have her first heat and then a couple of months later would be best. She was a very small yorkshire terrier so that had a lot to do with it too. Best of luck with her ;) |
I got Callie spayed around 8 months and it was before her first heat because I still feel doing it before there first heat is important. I thought I saw someone post some where that if all the baby teeth haven't fallen out by 6 months there more then likely not going to but I could be wrong. I think at 7 months they would be able to pull any baby teeth left but you will have to ask your vet to be sure. |
The whole puppy teeth thing is a concept I've had a hard time wrapping my brain around. My mom has had Yorkies all my life, and I don't remember any of them ever having retained teeth. I asked her about it and she said it was never a problem. I hope she didn't jinx us! |

Izzy is scheduled for February 4th - she will be 8 months - she still has baby teeth and is still losing some of them. Hubby was able to pull one out yesterday that was really loose. She still has a couple left and I am sure those will have to be pulled by the vet because they are not loose at all. Good luck with your little one. |
Another important consideration is if her growth plates are closed... determined by an xray. Hormones are responsible for so much/all of the developement in growing pups, turning them off early by spaying or neutering before this growth is complete can have some undesirable effects. |
My current vet will not spay or neuter a dog/cat under the age of 4 months. Previous vets also wanted to wait until pups were older, and scheduled a little too late so those couple mis-timings on the spay/early heat and other people not being as conscientious as me and I ended up with two 'oops litters' anyway. :rolleyes::p:D But I wait until they are older to spay and neuter. Their bodies depend on those organs for maturity. The only ones I had that were spayed and/or neutered early were fosters/adoptees from the Humane Society and they spay/neuter waaaay too young IMHO...although I understand the reason they do. |
So, I am going to wait until she is about 8 months. She does still have 2 top canines that will hopefully fall out in the next couple of months. Would her growth be complete by the time she is 8 months of age? |
