Just in a turmoil
 

Took Kayla in to the vet last Wed. after she had bled a place as big as my hand when she pottied. Found out it was colitis and was put on meds and the vet said no more canned food. Well, on top of everything else my regular vet moved and has gone to another clinic to far for me to take Kayla with the CT. While we were there it was terrible. Took her nearly 2hrs to settle down and be able to breathe right when we got home. I just can't take a chance on taking her very far and this vet is close. He just kinda whoo whood when I mentioned getting an oxygen tank for her in case she really got bad. I don't see a thing funny about it. Its horrible seeing them suffer like that. Then he brought in a bag of Science Diet, and I told him I had read where canned food was easier on the treachea than the kibble. Nooooo, he said no more canned. Well, she won't eat it and I don't blame her. Then of course there will be no more Interceptor and thats what mine have been on all their lives. They gave them Heartgard. Well, how can a 3lb. take the same amount as a 29lb. I feel like screaming. Sorry, but I lost a very good vet and it worries me about Kayla. THe rest could go somewhere else, but I just can't take a chance with her.

oh boy that is very tough. i assume no other vet options close? im sorry i hope that kayla is feeling better with her meds.

Oh no...that all just sounds so awful. It's horrible to lose a good vet...or hairdresser...or groomer, etc. for that matter...lol...and for all the same reasons. You always stay with the ones that do such good jobs and you like them...and absolutely awful sometimes to find another good one. Is there anyone else near enough to you? I hate to suggest the added expense of trying elsewhere, but if you are not comfortable with this new vet, it may be better in the long run to 'shop' for another vet. I am so sorry your baby is having such trouble. I hope she is better soon. {{{Hugs}}}

First of all, I totally feel your pain. I think you should keep searching and find another vet. This one doesn't seem compassionate or understanding (the least he could do is talk this stuff thru with you and explain why HE thinks something is the right thing to do and not poopoo on your concerns).

I was thinking that maybe you could drizzle a bit of broth or even just water on the kibble to soften it up for Kayla? I totally agree with the heartguard concern if the amount you are told to give is good for a dog up to 30 lbs. That's not right. I give heartguard but I'm pretty sure it's a dose for up to a 10 lbs dog.

The vet that is there is the one that owns the clinic. He is very good in some things but I just trusted her so much. SHe was sooooo caring and always called about the babies. She literally saved TIna's life years ago when she had a blood disease. I had seen several vets and she was the only one that knew what to do. Kayla is better with the colitis, but, I do not think it was canned food that caused it. I mix it anyway at least one meal a day with kibble. Its just the collasphed trachea that has me worried. He was just like, well, its genatic and surgery later on is about the only choice you have.

Does she have a CT problem?
Colitis is very easily managed by a low fat, high fiber diet. Canned food is very high in fat, so if used as a topper for kibble, a tablespoon a day should be fine. Stress to their tiny system also should be eliminated, like household cleaning products, pesticides, etc.
Princess had a very bad colitis episode couple of months ago which needed penicillin & vitamin B shots, subcutaneous fluids & a round of antibiotics to clear it up. I feed Princess The Honest Kitchen, which is low in fat & has a higher than normal fiber content for dog food. She's doing great, she gets that for breakfast & Canine Caviar grain free duck for dinner. Adding probiotics should help balance their flora in their sensitive tummies too.

I did read that thread on the CT and thought it was wonderful. But, then whether or not this vet would give her the shots is another thing. LIke I said he hooted about the oxygen. I had just read where you could rent the tanks but the vet has to give you a prescription. Evidently he needs to read up on CT. You would not believe what she sounds like. You can hear this clack, clack sound and she pants real hard. I really need to find someone that could come to the house and give her shots or whatever when she needs them. I always try to take her in to the vet when the weather is cooler too. She sleeps under a humidifer and fan. We have to keep her cool all the time.

Keep looking for another vet. I went through 4 different vet offices before I found one I really like and trust. One was too far away, one I swear I don't think he even liked dogs, and the third I just didn't have total confidence in. The one I'm with now is wonderful, but it took me a long time to find him. It seems like being in a big city like Dallas, you would have more options close to you. Keep looking and get references from others you know are like minded about their pets.

Losing a good vet is like losing a doctor that you have gone to for years. I think I would try to find another vet that is closer to you to try. You are the one living with the dog and know her better and what she can and can't stand. If nothing else maybe try calling your vet that moved away from you to just talk to her.

If you know where the vet you like is located,maybe you could give her a call and ask her for a recommendation. Tell her the truth,you arent crazy about the vet that owns the clinic or his attitude. Seems like he left his compassion at home in a drawer. Wish you were closer to FtWorth, I love our vet.

I have an oxygen....now I am having a brain infarct....oxygen ....what do they call that thing?????!!!!.....oxygen generator???? that isnt right...let me regroup and come back!!! I have one for my baby incubator for any babies that may need O2......they are great and it does not involve an O2 tank!!!

I AM BACK!!!! OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR! And you dont need a prescription for it!
