New Yorkie Mom-since August & baby Jax has been sick!
 

Hi, I got my precious baby at the end of August when he was 13 weeks old. The first time I took him in for a sick visit was just eight days after I got him. He has been in a total of six times for illness including an overnight stay. They are now checking him for a liver shunt and since it is the weekend, I have to wait until Monday to find out.

He is such a sweetheart! I have an auto immune disease and he is such a joy. On days when I feel really bad-he knows and will snuggle with me all day. It breaks my heart that he has already been sick, but now the possibility of a liver shunt is much more serious.

Jax is my first Yorkie- I am so glad to have found this forum.

He is a doll. So sorry you have to be ill and watch him be ill also. Sending prayers up for you both.

You need to keep your breeders phone number on speed dial and the second you find out what the problem is with your precious baby, you call her! She needs to assume responsibility for this sick little baby, even if it is NOT a liver shunt....NO ONE should ever buy a baby and have that baby continually sick! I will pray for your baby and you.....I do hope your news is great.....but your breeder should be involved with this poor sick baby....

Poor little guy. I hope he doesn't have liver shunt. As Yorkiemom 1 said you really need to notify your breeder of the problems you are having. Did they give you any kind of health guarantee? Regardless the breeder needs to be aware that the dogs she is breeding have produced a puppy with health problems so hopefully they will avoid a repeat breeding. Hope you get a good report from the vet on Monday.

Welcome to YT! I'm so sorry that both you and Jax have to suffer. It is great that he snuggles with you when you feel bad though. I'm praying that you get a diagnosis soon for Jax and can get him all better soon. You are doing great in taking care of him :)

:thumbup::thumbup: Also I really wish that the YTCA would change some guidelines and heartily recommend - BATS be done on all puppies at 16wks. and then at 6mths per protocol.

I think it is way past time for laws all over Canada and the States to get tougher. It breaks my heart, to hear of so many owners with pups that have genetic illnesses. Hey breeder if you want to breed, fine, but you are going to be responsible for genetic defects! Obviously there is a fair and equitable way to set up - maximum amounts for refund - and based on diagnostic findings, yada,l yada. And that includes the "puppy stores", that constantly sell dogs too young, and or ill.

Other professions come with liability to the consumer; why should dogs and cats and birds for that matter be exempt?

For the owner, the amount of money does little to ease the heart-ache involved. But it could at least help owners defray some costs, and make many treatments more easily available to them.

I know that we have as breeders other challenges with the law, and public perception; but imo just like all other facets of breeding, the ethical ones step up to the plate. After all the basics of money management is not too complicated. You set up a separate bank account for your breeding income and expenses. You set up a separate savings account for "deferred liability". How much well that is up to you to assess. How often you breed, the size of your litters, the known health risks in the breed; etc. I will put aside what equates to two puppies selling price.

And yes I do know that most of us spend on our dogs more than we take in. But you can handle it like any other small business. Once you set aside to savings what you need; then if your "business chequing" is out of funds - you transfer in funds from your personal account. Accounting wise it is referred to as Owners Withdrawals and Deposits.

One of the benefits of doing it this way, is that you truly get to see how much you spend on your dogs. It is always a sobering experience; but the upside of it for me is that; I can help rein myself in when deciding on purchasing yet another "upscale crate", or another doggie bed. I have access to how much I paid doing all the health testings, costs to show, costs to train, et al. I tell you I have more leashes then I truly need. There is always something to spend your money on! I have hand braided Aussie leather show leads, Russian rolled leather walking leads, various leads for swimming and "wet work". I have leads for Christmas, I have leads for hiking......

Anyhow I digress.

Jax is so cute! It's a shame you both have to go through this. I hope your vet can get down to the bottom of what's going on and get him feeling better. Please let us know when you find out.

Prayers for you and Jax. Make sure your vet is a good vet and you can trust what they tell you. I hope Jax has a treatable illness. He needs to be there for you! Dogs are such a comfort.

Thanks so much for all the prayers and well wishes. Just a little over 12 hours and I should know the results of the test. I realized last night after reading here that the new diet he was put on and the lactalose are both what they do give dogs with shunts. I don't know if the dr. is even more concerned than she let on and just figured not to worry me more until she knew for sure-considering that when we had to leave him overnight (for what they thought was a bowel obstruction, but thankfully turned out to be an ileus instead so no surgery) I used up almost a box of their tissues.

Now on to the breeder issue-I made a huge mistake I bought my precious baby online. I know, I know- I did no better, but I thought I had done my homework and just this one time and everything would be OK. NOT, BUT I am so thankful to have him and I know he was meant to be with me and he has a great home now where we all love him so much. All six of my kids, their girl/boy friends and especially my husband are all crazy over him. When I first got him, he hadn't even been socialized, he didn't have any bite inhibition and had never seen a puppy pad at 13 weeks! I read and read and read and passed it onto my kids-they are all teenagers or older and now he is like a different dog. Obviously, there were signs from the start and the drs. have mentioned it too and they are concerned now about inbreeding.
