Leg Lifting Vs. Squatting Just curious... I was reading a thread yesterday that mentioned a dog peeing on itself. So, I'm wondering if a male yorkie never learns to lift it's leg will he pee on himself while squatting or is it the other way around? I never really thought about this possible issue when dressing the furballs. I know leg lifting usually occurs by 6-8 months and is associated with marking. I just never thought about if neutering before they get to this stage may cause them to pee all over their cute little outfits. So, those of you who have male yorkies and dress them up, how do you prevent them from peeing on themselves and their clothes. Also, do they squat or a leg lifter. Thanks!:) |
:) Well, our Harry's a leg-lifter....sometimes he lifts it so high it makes him fall over.....I truly know that's not funny, but unfortunately it is! :D He won't wear clothes, so I can't respond to the other part of your question....but don't boy clothes have a 'little slit'?!!? :D Sally + Harry x |
hmmmm... I got Riley neutered at Exactly 6-months old... He is PeePad trained as well as going outside... He squats but will sometimes lift his leg a little... Not sure why he decides to do one or the other... I dress him in sweaters and/or jackets in the winter when we go outside and I have Never had any problems with him peeing on himself or his clothing. |
Brody does not lift a leg to pee...nor does he 'mark' and he is neutered...he just 'pushes down and a bit forward' to pee. He wears clothes...he and Mia LOVE their clothes...but he has never peed them or himself...nor does he step in the pee when he's done. Mia also wears clothes, and she squats low to the ground and lifts a leg a little bit, but she does not pee herself or her clothes either. The clothes do not cover the pee/poo places, so no trouble whatsoever. Of course, you may have a completely different situation...but I hope not. :p:D |
Bentley mostly lifts his leg and at other times he'll just stand there, kind of stretched out a bit...he has never squatted. As far as clothes...he lifts his leg when in a shirt but in a coat he stands always. He has never soiled any clothes. He was neutered at 6 months. |
Thanks everyone. Maybe I misinterpreted what was said? I feel relieved. |
Blazer usually lifts, occasionally he will squat, either way he's never pees on himself or his clothes. Yet. Buddy, my GSP, pees on his front leg constantly when he pees. Ugh. |
My Male Sneakers lifts his leg 100% of the time, and tries to shoot it as high up on whatever as he can. The "hi up" part is his attempt to disseminate his male scent better. ;) My Female Becca will squat but lift one of her hind legs a little. I think that's an issue where she doesn't want to get any more feet wet than necessary. My Male Puppy Ichabod is still observing these procedures, but mainly focused on improving his ability to crawl over the gates to the areas of the house where I have carpet. :( My Male Sneakers doesn't like to wear clothing, but tolerates Rain Gear. If I dress Becca, Sneakers pulls her clothes off the first chance he gets. I can't imagine where he learned that. |
I have a girl but am my moms yorkies fashion consultent and pick out a lot of his clothing and he pees squatting and by lifting the leg and either way if the shirt hits around his privet area it will get soaked. We don't buy really expensive shirts anymore unless they are custom made because we always have to cut them so hes not peeing on them. |
Bailey does both. Sometimes he's so lazy he just runs out back and squats. When we're walking he lifts his leg on everything. As mentioned, sometimes he lifts his leg soooooo high, I wait for him to tumble. As for clothing, when he wears his t shirts, we always fold them up when he goes outside. The we pull it back when he comes in. Other items of clothing are cut short enough underneath where it's fine for when he needs to go. |
Clyde & Dexter both alternate between squatting when they pee and lifting their legs. I dress up my boys all the time. In the morning when I let them out to pee they are in their PJ's, when I take them on a walk they are in a shirt or jacket, and often they are just wearing sweaters LOL. Not once have I ever had an issue with my dogs peeing on their clothes or on themselves. However, if you don't keep the hair next to their "area" trimmed really short that part will get wet when they pee. |
ZoE is a girl, but she lifts one of her back legs about an inch or two off the ground when she pees, so when she's done, she steps over it and not in it. She started doing this as she got older & her hair got longer. I don't think she likes to accidently pee on herself or step in pee puddles on her pads. I'm not complaining...and the little hovering back foot looks sooo cute. |
Morgan does both |
What I wondered was what do you dog with a little guy that lifts his leg when you are using pee pads? Can you still use pee pads with a leg lifting boy? All my males up to this point were trained to go outside so I have never had that issue. Have considered getting a male but wondered if they can still use the pads. |
