spaying-vet or local humane shelter
 
My Chloe will be 6 months in March. I am gonna get her spayed. If I take her to the vet, it will cost $180-300. The local humane shelter offers it for $60, however they don't do pre op blood work or pain meds after. What is your opinion? Thanks in advance.

To be honest, i'd go to the vet. These dogs are so small that a vet you trust would be more apt to know the risks and dangers that could be present when spaying a small dog. Plus the pre-op blood work can let someone know of any precautions they may need to take during the surgery. These dogs are so small that you just really need to be careful.

I totally agree, please go with the Vet.

I had Clyde neutered at a low cost vet clinic sponsored by an animal rescue. Very similar to the humane shelter. Clyde did perfectly fine & his neutering actually went better than Dexter's (who was done by a regular vet). Of course, Clyde is a larger Yorkshire terrier. They also gave him pain medication and an E-Collar, which I think was much needed.


If you have a tinier girl I would suggest going to a regular vet. My experience with a low cost clinic was excellent ... but I can't guarantee the same for every low cost clinic. Especially since we live in different areas.

Personally, I wouldn't do any non-emergency surgery without pre-op bloodwork. And no pain meds? Seriously? Wow. ZoE was spayed right before a holiday weekend & because the vet's office was going to be closed for days after her spay, I purchased extra pain meds (& our vet gave me his personal cell # incase there were any problems).

I just don't think it's worth the risk to save a couple hundred dollars....plenty of other areas I could go without & save to take care of my pup to the best of my ability.

Thanks so much. I was leaning towards the vet doing it too. I've had a larger dog and our cat done at the humane society. I didn't have any problems with either one, but Chloe is so small. I wouldn't want anything to happen to her, especially just to save a few dollars. The kids and I adore her so much already. Plus I just can't imagine no pain meds at all, except a shot before the surgery:eek:

That part really bother me too! With people, even young kids, they can talk & tell you they are in pain & how much, but your pup has minimal ways of communicating the intensity of her pain.

Best of luck on the spay. Hope everything goes smoothly & she has a quick recovery :)

I work at a humane society. We spay/neuter before they go home. In my case, all our shelter animals go to Texas A&M vet school and I know these people personally, they are the best of the best in my city!

Now, I do agree there should DEFINITELY be pre-op bloodwork done before a Yorkie goes under anesthesia. Just wanted to point out a reputable shelter is not going to take them to some backyard shady place lol.

Glad you asked this question, I was wondering the same thing. Our Camrey will be spayed in March, too. I was leaving toward the vet and now after reading all the responses, I am definitely having it done at our vet's office. Thanks everyone!

Our local Humane Society does it in house...and there's no way I'd have my dog seen there (my daughter was a volunteer there for two years during high school).

You must be very close to your vet school. I'm about 50 mins away from Michigan State Vet School and they don't fix any of the animals at our humane society or county shelter.

So, the quality that you get probably depends on where you're at.

Another small detail that is actually, quite critical.....do they use a gas anesthesia? The three major issues I have is #1) post op pain med......2) pre op blood work and intra operative IV fluids to keep baby tanked up with glucose and fluids, since they seldom want to rush home and eat......3) gas anesthesia....IV anesthesia claims Yorkies simply because of their inability to metabalize the sedation....they are easily overdosed, and they just dont wake up.....

Yes, I guess I overlook that sometimes. I personally load up the dogs and kitties and drive them in a huge van to the school. It's about a 20 minute drive. We are lucky to be located so close to such a great vet school!

I can't tell you the number of times I've had to pick up a 50 lb dog and carry it up three sets of stairs because the poor things have never been taken for a walk once in their life and have no clue what a leash is :(

It's awesome that you work to get these animals spayed & neutered. I have a couple of friends that are really involved in a local shelter and are always posting pics of the animals on their FB pages trying to drum up homes for them, and almost every animal they list is not fixed :(. You have to wonder if the raging hormones & aggressive behavior & marking are contributing to the reason they are in the shelter in the first place.

My daughter had a hard time at the humane society. She wanted to bring home everything....especially the old ones that were reaching their maximum length of stay before they were killed. She always thought she wanted to be a vet, and but after sitting in on some surgeries & seeing animals euthanized, she changed her mind.

Oh, it IS so hard. I posted on YT when I first got my internship. I was afraid of the e/u certification that I would have to do if I actually got hired. I\'m not proud of the fact that I work in a "kill" shelter...the most attached I got was to a BEAUTIFUL, amazing, just...I am tearing up thinking about this dog. Beautiful senior dalmatian/border collie mix named Tango. Long story short Tango was overlooked for months because he was old, which I was stupidly, selfishly happy about. I bonded to this dog so deeply that when he tested HW positive I cried and cried and begged my boyfriend to help me pay for his treatment so he had a better chance at getting adopted. He was just the best...hw treatment is just so expensive, and I knew this might happen in the future and I\'d be in the same situation. We can\'t save them all. I wish we could. I asked them if I could foster him. It was a long process and I got denied because I live in an apartment and Tango was a big dog. He had to be euthanized.


ANYWAYS, shelters are great and I wish more people would volunteer. It\'s hard but someone\'s gotta do it!!
