open fontanel I bought a puppy and took her to the vet. He said she has an open fontanel. He said it may never close but that it should be fine. What do you think? Has anyone ever had this and it turn out okay. I love this little girl! |
How large is it? That is the same thing as a "soft spot" on a human babys head.....you just want to be cautious about it.... Some are a real problem, others are really nothing to worry about, and they will close off as the bones in the babys skull grow and fuse. It can also be problamatic, and if there are any signs of bulging or swelling, it indicates you have pressure in the skull/brain cavity....indicative of hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. If it is a little area, like 1/4 the size of a dime, and there is no bulging, your baby will be fine....an open fontanel is NOT an automatic critical issue or death warrant. If they are the size of a dime or larger, that bears more watching and caution and careful care. |
I have only been around one who had this so am not an expert on it but wanted to welcome you to YT. You might want to post in the breeders section or sick and injured they could probably help more. oops editing Yorkiemom1 and I posted at the same time lol. She can help you. |
Thanks ladies. The vet said it is small and shouldn't pose a threat of any kind. He said she looks great otherwise. It just had me worried. |
The vet did say it doesn't look like it will be hydrocephalus. |
Excellent! Welcome to YT...thousands of members on here, 24/7, that have expertise in sooooooo many different areas.....Take off your hat and coat, stick around, and ask any questions you may have! |
Thank you so much for the advice and warm welcome. i will stick around. |
Welcome! My Roxie has a small one. It did get smaller than it was when she was a puppy but never closed completely. She is 5 and has never had a problem. I do keep her bow over that area just for a little extra protection. |
Welcome! & Congrats! My only advice would be to watch things that are sharp that are in little puppy walking level. |
