New to YorkieTalk AND Yorkies!
 

Hello everyone,
I am new to the site, but I am sad to say I have yet to own a Yorkshire Terrier. I have been doing a LOT of research (much to my girlfriends dismay with me talking about them constantly! :) ) and thought being on this site would give me a good place to find answers to the MANY questions that I have regarding these sweet creatures!
At this point, I have been reading about how to prepare yourself and home for them, as well as training tips. The trouble Im running into is if I need to be reading a Yorkie specific training book, or if a general one is alright? Also, I need to learn more about house breaking and the first month of having a baby. I'm also having trouble with FINDING a Yorkie that isnt from a Puppymill but that isnt going to cost me 2,000$ which I just cant afford. I have no interest in breeding my little man or lady but I want to make sure (s)he isnt coming from a bad place so needless to say I have been really doing my homework. Rescuing is almost impossible if I want a baby so Im trying to do the responsible thing!
Anyway, that doesnt introduce me much, just my current thoughts on Yorkies. As for myself, Im from Alberta, but living in BC as a French teacher. I have never owned my own dog but have when I was a child, so Im looking forward to the adventure of a new dog.

Hi and welcome to YT! You will definitely want to find a reputable breeder. I know $2000 sounds like a lot, but if you save up, you are going to do yourself a favor in the long run. If you risk getting a yorkie that costs less, you are basically going to be getting it from a non-accredited breeder and the pup may have genetic and other health issues. Those issues will end up costing you up to that $2000 or MORE anyway. So, may as well pay the money for a well-bred and HEALTHY pup. Ya know? :)

And, here is a place to start looking to find a reputable breeder (remember, you want to shop for the breeder - not the puppy. Find the right breeder and you'll find the right puppy for you):

It is fantastic that you are researching ahead of time. Use the info that you are finding and make a well informed decision...if you do that, you'll be so happy and you'll have a healthy yorkie puppy that will give you so much love! :)

Hi, and welcome. You will love having a Yorkie, whether you get him/her as a baby or a rescue. I got Brody, who needed a new 'good' home at 14 months old, and got (golden) Mia, who also needed a new 'good' home when both were 17 months old. They will be 3 years old in March...6 days apart in age...and you would never be able to tell they did not live with me as puppies. They are well bonded with us humans, and we have learned to cater well to their every whim. :p Seriously, the 'attitude' and 'thought' behind their actions sets Yorkies apart...IMHO...a huge part of their charm! I see nothing wrong with looking at rescues while looking at breeders to see where your...and your GF's puppies are. :D Oh, yeah, after you get one, you may find you 'need' that second Yorkie! :p

Hello and Welcome to YT. "Yorkies For Dummies" is the first one I recommend. ."Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide" is the second book. These are excellent resource books .Another book "How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days" Is very helpful. They are not as easy to housebreak.

Guinness says not to get this book.. He does not believe in their methods :p

But yes you need a Yorkie book because this breed is nothing like the rest :p

He is Canadian, Teri. Check out the Canadian equivalent...I know Lorraine is in BC, and is a member on here, she may be able to point you in the right direction if she doesn't have puppies available. Be prepared to go on a waiting list when you do find a good/reputable breeder.

Its great your doing research before hand and this is a great place to do it! Yorkies are very different from any breed I have had so I would think a yorkie book would be best.

Thanks for the info,everyone. I will def be ordering those books! .. But Im curious, Guinness, what it is that you dont like about those books?
Verbena, do you think I should have a separate book for housebreaking? Are these things that I should start the day I get him/her?:aimeeyork
Navilleusc... Im so happy you were able to find rescues! Thats what I would prefer.. :)
