Getting my first yorkie puppy at 6 weeks...advice appreciated I work with animal shelters/rescues and one of them just rescued a 6 week old yorkie puppy that I am going to adopt. The people who had dogs agreed to release the puppy and dad, but not mom. So, any advice would be greatly appreciated! I realize that this is incredibly early for puppies to be taken away from their mothers, but it can't be controlled in this situation. She is being thoroughly checked by our vets and if everything checks out I can take her home on Thursday. Thank you for reading! |
I know that you know it is incredibly early to take a yorkie away from it's mom. Mine are still nursing a good portion of the time at that age. That being said....at about 5 weeks I do introduce food. I feed raw and also I grind up kibble and add warm water to it. In your case, I think I would use goats milk instead of water. After a couple weeks of that, I use a meat tenderizer and just break up the doggie kibble and feed that. At probably about 10 weeks, I go ahead and leave out the full sized (tiny puppy) kibble. Mine do good with that. I would also be extra conscious of socializing your puppy in all types of situations, with people other dogs etc. I recommend reading the book "The breeders guide to raising superstar puppies" by Jerry Hope. Even though I know you are not breeding, it's got alot of great tips about raising puppies up until about 12 weeks of age. Good luck! Puppies are a lot of work but I also find it very fulfilling! |
Bless you for taking her, realize that you do indeed have your hands full, take the next couple days to read, read, read on YT, especially in the breeders section. I hope you continue to post and thread here so that you can get all the help and support you will need...we will be here for you. I wish you much luck in taking care of this sweet baby...(I also hope someone checks on that momma at some point)....keep us posted! Welcome to YT!:) |
I will be praying for all the best for you and your new puppy. I helped my sister-in-law with one barely 7 weeks and it was quite a job, so will also pray for strength for you :). Remember to feed often, every 2 to 3 hours, make sure it is getting plenty of fluids, and keep nutrical on hand. Also keep the vet on speed dial. Good luck and God bless. |
Yorkies for Dummies" and "Yorkshire Terriers: A Smart Owners Guide".....these two books are MUST HAVES. You need to google Puppy Development Between 6 weeks and 12 weeks of age.....these are the things that take place during that time frame...and the importance of these stages and what issues or problems arte to be expected when these stages are not developed in the momma-baby bond/relationship. You are going to have to teach that baby what his momma should be teaching him. |
I think it's great you you will take baby...are you taking Dad, too? So sad Mommy cannot come with baby, but what cannot be helped cannot be helped, and bless you for your part in the rescue. I haven't had a rescue baby that young in quite a while, but you have been given lots of good advice. I hope all goes well and you are completely successful. :) |

Welcome to YT! I hope all goes well with this little one, bless your heart for rescuing her..Good Luck! |
It is awesome you are going to be taking one a rescue. You need to make sure you can be with this puppy pretty much all the time until it gets older in case it get hypoglycemia. Also food is very important if you cannot get the puppy to eat you will have to force feed and I am sure you vet can show you how. I will be keep you and this little pup in my prayers. Please please please keep us update and we are here to help you. |
Welcome to YT! Prayers your way. Keep us all posted! |
Thank you everyone so so much!! I really can't tell you how much I appreciate it! I've downloaded all the recommended books so I will start on them today. The coffee grinder is a great idea, I'm going to pick one up today. What kind of area would be best to keep the puppy until she gets older, a little nursery area or a kennel and what is the best way to set it up? I've had different opinions on that, but the people I spoke to don't specialize in Yorkies. Thank you again! |
