Teeth low down and bone q's I need the teeth low down. Besides tooth paste and water additives what do you use on your dogs teeth? The vet said the best chews are ones that you can bend and indent with your nail does any one use any chews like this and what type are they? Are nylabones a good choice and which one if so? Callie has to chew on something and we are thinking one bully stick a week after we talk to the vet dentist about it at her check up in two weeks. Callie is a big bone chewer and needs something to chew on or she gets board and only wants to sleep. |
Im not sure , but this post kind of made me think of the dentastick commercials where the dogs have "doggy dentures" LOL |
Jackson is the same. He NEEDS something to chew on at least two-three nights a week. Or he'll drive me crazy. That vet dentist told me the same thing... but I asked her specifically about bully sticks, and she said they should be fine. She warned me against hard nylabones and antlers. I think we waited a week or two before giving him anything though. His mouth was definitely sore the first week. He gets a 'Get Naked' chew at night every night (but they last him all of 2 mins, LOL). But they're similar to Dentastix except a bit harder, and healthier. He loves them. But they are not a keep busy chew at all. Just a nightly snack. |
Mandie chews on nylabones and also on some rubber toys. She loves bullysticks but doesn't get them as often as she'd like lol. Her favorite chew toy is her brother's back legs, though. hehe I brush her teeth with coconut oil. |

We use the get naked treats as well! The girls love them. :) |
Huey's daddy buys him the Butcher Shoppe smoked dog bones at Publix. He always gets him the huge ones and they last for months. He gets a new one several times a year and we throw away the old one. (Somehow he has managed to keep 3 at the same time because I found them buried under the pad in his crate) |

As far as the chews go that is another advantage of the things like bully sticks. As they chew on the stick it gets soft enough for them to get their teeth into and it helps to scrape the stuff off their teeth. |
Here is a pic of Benny my chihuahua with a bully stick. All three of my guys love them. I call them crack sticks, LOL. Jack's favorite are the spiral ones. http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/a...386695181b.jpg |

If you do decide to get her some bully sticks try to get her the Best Bully Brand. I have tried several other brands and they were just too soft. She could actually eat them and that is not the idea of a good chew. The dog should be able to chew for hours and not get very far on the stick. I think some companies process them to be soft so the owners will have to keep buying them more often. I get Gracie (5) regular thickness 12" Best Bully sticks on Ebay for $15.78. That is more than enough for 2 months for her. They are hard enough that she cannot bite any off or chew them too fast. Since your girl is a little bigger you may want to get the thick size at 12" or more. Best Bully does have a website but the shipping is more expensive there. They also sell them on Amazon. For $15.78 you can at least give it a try and see what you think. You can buy them individually on their website if you just want one but the shipping is still a lot. |

There is a lot of people giving their Yorkies antlers here. I am curious to see if they are having a problem with tooth breakage |

I add Plaque Off to my baby's food everyday. It has excellent reviews on Amazon. Amazon.com: Proden PlaqueOff Dental Care for Dogs and Cats, 60gm: Pet Supplies |
An uncooked bone (depending on what kind) can help clean teeth. As they chew into the marrow of then bone it does clean the teeth and the calcium and other nutrients are good for the dog. Cooked bones are too prone to splinter and cause injuries to the throat, stomach or intestines. |

Warning though, one time I tried a lamb bone - the big femur bone. Thank goodness I stayed in the room. I think it was 5-10 minutes later Magic had broken the bone up:eek::eek: I immediately took them away. Razzle was well on his way to breaking the bone as well. Sigh those terrier jaws. I like the bison bones - one of those keeps Magic engaged for about 5 hours. The bison bones are too big for Razzle - I use the small knuckle sized beef bone for him. I have tried the nubby toys designed for dental care - but they just are not rugged enough. They only last maybe an hour.... And then you got to go around and find all the little bits of the rubber. Those were the only toys that they are allowed to chew on - all other toys are for find and retreive and rewards for obedience. For teething I have had very good luck with the hard key rings, they have different sized keys on it. They come in a range of sizes too:D Usually by the time the teething is done so is the key ring. I was going to try the deer antlers but reading this, and also seeing the sharp pointed end .... I don't think so now. |
