uh oh....kids getting itchy My 2 youngest kids have never shown any allergies to dogs. They play with my friends 3 dogs as well as dogs in our neighborhood. The past week when we've played with some dogs they've gotten some red splotches and hives. Tonight my friends 2 westies and 1 scottie caused a reaction when they haven't before (and they had all been bathed recently). No sneezing, itching eyes or cough, but I am worried about this skin reaction and if it could progress into something else. We were just getting ready to add a puppy to our house :( I'm planning on putting a call into the allergist tomorrow. sigh |
I would certainly get that kind of reaction checked out. You could have the allergist test them for a dog allergy. It may actually be something else but at least you know where to start. |
There could be other reasons for reactions. The shampoo, conditioner, a spray they may use to brush them with or even a perfume. Also depends if the dogs got near something like a pollen or dust. |

Consider any other environmental changes - new foods, change in type laundry soap, fabric softener, bath soap, shampoo, new clothes not first washed, etc. Might take some detective work. Good luck! |
I'm pretty sure it was the dogs, not any other factors (detergent, shampoo etc). I think it's that they have been having increasing exposure to dogs and they may have become sensitized. I called the allergist and am waiting a return call. I'm just hoping that since the yorkie is so small, there just isn't a big enough body to produce lots of dander lol. Maybe they can tolerate it in small amounts. If I knew it would stay only a skin thing, and not progress to sneezing, asthma attacks etc, that would help, but I doubt they can predict that. Allergies are tricky, especially in 2 different kids again, sigh |
I have a friend who's two kids are allergic to practically everything that you can think of but when it comes to dogs they are only allergic to their saliva so they know not to let dogs lick them. Definitely take your kids in for allergy testing before you add a dog to the mix, it'll save a lot of heartache down the road. |

I am not allergic to my yorkie--but very allergic to grass. If she has rolled in the grass, I have that type of reaction.. But, I woild test so you don't add a puppy and have to re-home. |

Yorkies do not have fur in the traditional sense but they do have skin and that is what makes dander. It is taking a risk. I'm sure you want what is best for your kids and you would not want to have to re-home a dog after finding the kids are reacting to it. I guess having them tested and talking to the doctor would be best at this point. |
You should be ok with Yorkies. They don't shed (but do need to be brushed). So hopefully there won't be any allergy problems. |
