This is backwards...... But I need tips on teaching Joel to bark when someone is at the door. Sometimes if the kids are being loud or i'm changing a diaper I can't always hear the door and Joel will just be standing there staring at the door when some one knocks, lol. Rosco is usually the door alarm but he's having trouble hearing so he doesn't always hear a knock, he barks after someone comes in, haha |
I could fly Mandie up there for a few days. I'm sure she would be happy to show Joel how it's done. *sigh* ;) |
LOL! I don't know if that would work because when cousin Milo is here and barks at the door Joel gets scared and runs to Rosco:D |
LOL! Hmmm, I'm not sure what you could do. Maybe knock on the door or have someone go outside and knock on the door and then tell him to speak. When he does, give him a treat. Do it over and over again..then daily until he gets it. I suppose that is what I would do for starters anyway. |
Guinness could teach him to bark at the doorbell, knocking, doorbell on TV, knocking on TV, the rain, rain hmmm ice dropping in the ice maker haha |
We had that issue with Dexter. He isn't really a barker. Especially when it comes to the doorbell. I have one way that might work for your boy Joel! Teach him to speak (if he doesn't already know how). Then have someone who is willing to stand outside and ring the doorbell for you (though I know that might be very cold where you live). Once he knows the speak command, ask him to speak every time the person outside rings the doorbell & reward him with a treat. Eventually ... remove the actual command "speak" and continue to reward him for barking when he hears the bell ring. I think if done properly he will eventually relate the sound of the door bell ringing to the barking command. I think teaching them to speak is the hard part LOL ... I had to bark at my dogs like a fool to get them to learn the command. |
Thanks all:) I guess I'll start some lessons with him, hmmm now I just have to get my sister outside to be the door knocker, hehe The good thing is he's good at barking on command but he never barks by himself Quote:
