Uugggghhhh! In al of my smugness I would read all these threads about getting our little ones to take their meds. Boy did I set back and felt all high and mighty because Brandi loves taking her meds. Boy was I wrong.....two days ago she decided she was all better and inform me that she was no longer going take her pills. I usually put her pill in her food and she would gobble it up. Well now lil missy eats around her pill and if I put it her mouth she spits it out. I have to admit it is kinda cute how she spits it out. I place in her mouth and she gently places it back in my hand :p. So now I have to go get a pill popper. We had a long talk though and I told her how important it was for her to take her pill twice a day. So we'll see how it works out. |
I've never had any problem if I melt mozzarella cheese and put the melted cheese around the pill and let it cool. They can't lick if off, like they do some foods, they swallow it in one piece without chewing. It would probably work with other cheeses, but the trick is to melt it so it becomes one with the pill. Also, mozzarella is low fat. |

My Male Sneakers has literally slung it across the room. I've covered it with Cheese, and still have to use my finger to get it far enough down, where he can't reject it. And, this may take several attempts. Such a pain ! I wonder if the Companies which make those "disliked" pills, might realize they are loosing business to another, which makes a Pill that our animals like ? ;) |
Pill poppers are the easiest way. I use them for the cats. I don't get it back and do not have to worry about melting of the pill because I got it back a few times |
Peanut butter is the trick here. He swallows it whole! |
I think I figured out a way. I've been covering the pill with her food, then I let her lick the food out of my hand and I gently clamp down her mouth until she swallows it. So far it has worked. She swallows it with no problem and it prevents her from spitting it back out again. She will be taking these pills probably for the rest of her life so I have to find a method that will work. Its for her liver shunts. Since surgery is not a option at least right now, (she's almost 13), the vet put her on lactulose, metronindacyl (sp?) and prescription hill L/D and of course periodic bile acid test. The biggest improvement I've see is no more recurring urinary tract infections. I'm am keeping my fingers crossed that she lives a long life as I know liver shunts can go either way. |
