Update on Milo Its been a bad 2 days. The shots really on a a number on my baby. I didn't know they would make him be so sick. He got his rabies and DA2P+CPV+CV. I do know that next time he will get one at a time because he has a reaction to one of them. He has finally started to play this morning :) but he is still sore and don't want us to rub his back or pick him up. :( I have felt so bad for him. |
aww poor baby. i give mine all seperate for the same reason. hope hes back to his normal soon!! |
I am sorry that Milo has been feeling bad. I do not understand why Drs warn parents that an imunization shot can make a child sick for several days. But vets dont warn of the same thing. It is normal to hang out at the Drs,incase of a reaction but not at the vet. I hope that he is back to his playful self quickly. |
Poor sweet Milo. I hope he is feeling better. I had a friend who had a little Yorkie get a rabie shot and she died from that. Little dogs expecially the really tiny ones-you must be very careful with the shots. It is risky. |
My vet would never give all those shots at one time to a small breed dog. It's good you are going to have them given at different times next time. Some vets don't do a lot of work with small dogs but it seems to me they should be aware of what can happen to a small dog when given shots like that all at once. Hope he gets back to his normal self soon. |
I hope that poor baby is getting better...I'm so sorry for you I know how badly you feel...remember, he knows you love him! |
Thanks everyone for checking on him.:) |
I'm happy to read that he is slowly getting back to his old self. I'm sorry he's had such a hard time and is still so sore. |
After reading YT and the problems our pups can have with shots, I insisted they give the shots 1 at a time. I read somewhere (maybe here) that the rabies shots are for dogs up to 25 lbs. Yorkies are about 1/5 that size on average. I took a day off work when she got that shot. I'm just slightly over protective! LOL! Glad your Milo is doing better :) |
My Dexter had a reaction to his shots when he got them when he was a year old. He would lay on my lap, very lethargic and he literally screamed in pain when I just petted him softly. I told the vet and he said he'd give him a pain shot before his next vaccines. So he did and he was not in pain the next time, but he had an allergic reaction and got covered in itchy hives all over his little body, his eyes swelled shut! NOWWWWW.... he gets a shot of pain reliever, a shot of benedryl, and his vacs, all at the same time. LOL Speaking of, after a quiet 3 years, we go for shots this month! YIKES! |
Milo is running around with underwear in his mouth this morning. Just trying to get me to chase him. Never thought I would be happily that he is doing this but I am today because that's means he is all better. Yea! I have read and learned alot about vaccines over the past few days. I will know better next time. |
Ahhhh yes the multiple shots at once. We learned our lesson this year and won't ever give Bailey all his shots at once. Glad to hear all is ok once again. |
Stupid vet. Shots should be given separately at least 4 weeks apart, no wonder the poor wee soul is ill, be sure to raise that issue with your vet |
I'm so glad that your little boy is feelings better. I'm sorry that he had such a reaction to the shots. You must have been so scared. I wish we could protect our little ones from all harm and illness. |
Glad to hear he is back to himself! |

I am so thankful Milo is feeling better. Please be careful with those shots, especially the rabies one. Yorkies are so little and fragile and these shots can kill them. I will be saying thankful prayers for your little Milo. He is dragging underwear! Yorkies can make us laugh! Enjoy every moment! |

I've read that some actually give the 3-year shot annually, too...and advise that pet owners confirm what exactly is being given. Granted, that sounds unbelievable and very scary...so many reactions...you really need a good vet that you know and can trust, but, like anything else, that can be hard to find. I am glad Milo is recovering from his ordeal. {{{Hugs}}} |
I am very glad he is beginning to play and be himself. Amy just finished her shots and I had that given one at a time. Next year when rabies is due I might do the 3 year shot instead of the one year. I figure for 2 years she won't have to have rabies done. Will decide next December. A friend's dog had all his shots at once this year and he weighs 7 pounds. His face swelled up and she had to rush him to the vet. Next year he will have one at a time. |

This is an interesting article on over vaccination of pets. There are varied opinions and most are just that "opinions." This doctor has been studying the issue for several years. Schultz: Dog vaccines may not be necessary (March 14, 2003) Seems to be a pretty balanced approach. I do believe in dong titers before re-vaccinating. It is not a huge expense. Why keep exposing the immune system to these things if it is not necessary? It is the vaccine companies that make the guidelines and they do have a vested interest in frequent vaccination. |
Sometimes this is a tough call...thank goodness I had a vet that was very in tuned to our baby's needs......she spread out the shots over two week intervals and at times giving half doses................ |
Maggie got sore last year when she got all her shots, rabies and the combo...This year she didn't need rabies and I had read that it is the L (lepto) that can cause them to react so we discussed it and decided she didn't really need it. She got DHPP (no L) and bordatella. She still reacted the same, so it wasn't the rabies or the L. I think hers was partly pain from the injection and some reaction to the drugs themselves. (humans often feel a little sick after vaccines too.) Glad he's feeling better! |
Bad reaction I just made it through a very difficult 24 hours with Hazel. She had an allergic reaction to her vaccines and is finally feeling better this morning. I did let them give her a 6 in 1 shot with her rabies and that was just too much. After reading many of the posts here in YT, I know how problematic that idea now is. Within an hour of receiving her vaccines she started panting and scratching. Her little tummy was covered in red blotches and the inside of her ears were bright red. She was extra thirsty and super anxious too. As you can imagine, I was frightened. One advantage to having allergies myself is that I was able to monitor her based on my own knowledge of anaphylaxis shock syndrome. Plus, both my sons are firemen ~ that too helped to keep me calm. So, I started her on children's liquid Benadryl, 3ml doses immediately. As a preventative I believe she should have already had a dose before the shots. Then I ended soaking her an oatmeal bath and thank goodness that seemed to really help a lot! In conclusion, we will be getting a titer test before any more vaccines are administered in the future. |

How can a vet do that knowing little dogs react to these shots! Now we know not to get those shots together. If I had a very small Yorkie I would be leary of the rabies shot. My friend lost a Yorkie from that shot. These dogs are so tiny and their little systems cannot take the high-powered drugs. Same with flea meds. Be very careful and research before you give your dog any meds. I refused to give the flea med Triflexis after I read up on it. Vet said yes, I said no. You take Control. Yorkies are too precious to take chances with. Feed them right and vacinate them very carefully and watch flea stuff. Revolutiion worked best for me but I did my research. |

My vet only gives one shot at a time. It's like 3 or 4 different things in one shot though. They said next time it's rabies. The first two were several things listed and also the bordatella nasal squirt which Lilly thought was very rude LOL She also squeals when they take her temperature. She looks at me with these big ol eyes like Momma help me!! And all I can do is hold her little face and rub her ears. It does seem to help when I do that though. |
