a little hop? I was wondering, is it odd that I noticed today that my 10 month old is starts walking fast with a little hop to her back right leg. I felt it and nothing weird, she's not crying. Still just,PS and runs. Anyone else's yorkie do this? Now I'm worried! |
There's been others that do this, I'm bumping this for you so those that have seen their pups do this will respond. If your worried, call the vet Weds. and have it looked at. If there's no pain or discomfort, it should be ok to wait. |
Should I be worried? |

Theres a few threads on Luxating Patellas... I don't know if your pup is hopping like that or not, but look at them and see if it's the same or not. There's also a few videos showing dogs with the hop (Luxating Patellas) on you tube that you can watch... I hope it's just a quirk your pup is doing. If you want to look and see what Luxating Patellas are, it might help you. :) BUMPing for better help  |
You might want the vet to check it out it could be LP but not sure. |
Make an appointment for an xray...better safe than sorry. Mini was 10mos. when her Legges Perthes reared its ugly head, luckily it is fixable but must be addressed quickly...I don't know if this is what your pup has, and she may very well not...but have it checked out. Good Luck, keep us posted! |
also, no don't worry, don't panic. As I said, make the appointment and ask for an xray. It hit me right away when you mentioned hop because that is exactly how I described it....xrays revealed the problem and we were able to get a very good Ortho specialist. Mini had no signs nor symptoms prior to this...she also did not seem to be in pain at all. Legges Calves Perthes...Mini did not show the signs commonly described, all she had was a hop. Please don't panic yourself, it could be anything. I would, until you get to the vet limit any jumping. Remember it could be anything or nothing. |
Agree. It is something to have checked out. It's not an emergency but it is best to find things out early. I had a Shih Tzu that kind of hopped as a puppy and he never lifted his leg as an adult. We thought it was odd but he seemed fine so we didn't think anything of it. It was not until he had an injury when he was 7 years old that we found out he had hip dysplasia. Since Yorkies are prone to LP it is something to have checked. |
Well, so far today I haven't seen any hopping at all. She's running jumping, and playing rough as her usual self. Thanks for all the advice, but I'll keep a close eye on her still. Happy new year everyone! |
My little Abby does that from time to time - sort of kicks her left back leg. The vet said it was her patella "catching" and could (not always) require surgery. Abby is almost two years old and has had no issues. I have doggie steps and ramps for the living room couch and beds. She uses those all the time and does not jump off things. I got my steps and ramp from Chris (topdogsteps@mchsi.com) - he makes them. I had him add rails to the ramp and it turned out great. They even have paw prints on the carpet - cute. |
