Marking Hey guys, I have a 2 year old male yorkie. He has had anxiety issues from day 1 and we have come a loooong way for sure. But about 7 months ago he started marking a couple of spots in the house. I thought we were getting better....but I introduced another 5mo old male into the house about 3 weeks ago. His marking has gotten out of control. I knew this was coming... I do have a 6 yr old female and they all seem to get along great now. He use to only mark if I was gone from the house. I do leave a male diaper on him when I am not at home. I go out of my way to give him alot of attention since he is soo insecure. My question is.. has anyone ever used a dog behaviorist/ trainer for this issue?? I just dont want my other puppy to pick up this bad habit from him. I have thought about leaving the diaper on him all day, but it is kinda bulky and he doesnt like to weat it all the time. My vet seems to think this is all tied into him being secure and his anxiety issues. I do have Xanax for him, but I only use it if he is going to be in a stressful situation. Any suggestions?? ...at this point, I am going to have to rip up the carpet in my bedroom due to the pee stinch:confused: |
is he neutered, if not are you a breeder? neutering him helps a lot with marking. also crating him while you are gone is another way of curving his marking. I crate my males when I go out I am a breeder and my males tend to mark when I go out specially my new yorkie, so they get crated when I go out. hugs, |
Yes he is neutered.. I do leave him in an x-pen while at work. He seems to do the most damage while I am at home now. We spent about 3 hours Saturday taking down Christmas decorations and he had soo much anxiety because we were not doing our "normal routine" that he marked at least 3 places in the house. |
ok, does he has a safeplace in the house where he goes when he is nervous, my dogs go to their crates when I am doing things, I just leave the crates open and they go and laydown, put him in his pen when you are doing stuff like that, that way he knows that he is safe, also I use a gel called calm and relax on my yorkie Prada because she gets nervous, it works for us, I hate heavy medications on my dogs for nerves I try to go the homeopathic way.. also is a spray that works with marking I got it at my local petsmart., I clean and spray it on the spot and they seem not to like the smell, it smells like a grass to me...LOL hugs, |
I have never had a male that marked and I have never heard of neutered males doing it until I came to this forum. Does this little guy get to go on walks or go out for exercise regularly? I know most male dogs love to mark while on a walk through the neighborhood or any where there are trees. It might help him to get that out of his system. I have seen people here talk about using belly bands on their males that mark. It seems like a better idea than a diaper. The crate for when he is nervous sounds like a good idea. Or you could maybe put him in a bedroom or bathroom that has a comfortable place for him until things calm down. |
The only reason I use the diaper is that it has elastic around the edges and it stays on him better. No matter how many bellybands I tried, he always wiggled himself out of them. All he has to do is stretch and pops himself right out of it. He does go for walks and plays regularly. If he gets really stressed and I try to crate him or put him in his xpen, he will poop everywhere. He will even go outside and mark over where my other dogs have peed. And, I do clean the areas he marks in the house with a cleaner that is supposed to remove the smell and stain, but he continues to do it. He is a highly anxious little guy... |
