Yorkie height question? Out of curiosity....what is the average height of a yorkie? Our Max is 6 yrs and is 8 in. tall, Teeka is 6 months and already 7 1/2 in. tall! Is she at her full height or does anyone think she will get taller? I don't know how tall her parents were.....they just looked average. |

well the akc yorkie standard calls for 7 " in height average but as you may know yorkies come in all shapes and sizes.. if your little girl is already 7 1/2" at 6 months she could possibly get 2 or more inches taller.. by 1 year of age she should be at her full height but some yorkies continue gaining weight after that... |
Wow, she is going to be tall! The breeder thought she would be on the smaller side, weighing around 3 lbs, which she already is! I guess it is just a "guess" as to how big pups will be as adults! |

I just measured her again and she is 7 1/4 from shoulder to floor. She has really long legs! Do you think Max is short for a yorkie? Tameka who passed away in Aug. was only 7 1/2 in. full grown and weighed 4 lbs exactly. I was hoping Teeka would be about the same size. |

So, her back length should be about the same as her height? She is measuring 8 1/2 across the back. |
well i guess i was wrong about the height but i did read in one of my yorkie books that "average" height of a yorkie up to 7 pounds is 7 inches.. i guess you will know when she full grown whenever that is :D |
Thank you for the info! |
Many breeders make this promise of a 4lb or under Yorkie. It is very unfair for a breeder to make such a promise since that is not the ordinary size for a Yorkie. |
So how can breeders advertise puppies for sale with a certain estimated weight if no one really knows how big a yorkie will get? I always see the estimated weight or size on the websites. How do they really know? I love my little girl any size that she will be...just can't believe she is going to be that tall! |
I was curious about height before too. Just as a random "survey"..here's some examples of the differences: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ur-yorkie.html |
So after reading how tall some of the yorkies are on here, they are averaging 8"-10". The standard is suppose to be 7".....so why are there so many taller than standard yorkies? I only saw 2 that were under 7"! Is everyone breeding taller yorkies? Just curious!!!! |

well apparently there is no height standard for yorkies. i did some more reading and it says their height should be equal to their topline so they are a perfect square.. for example my oscar is 11" long & 11" tall but he is 1 year 4 months... if you measure your little girls topline (base of neck to base of tail) that is how tall she should be.. it is not an exact science because not all yorkies are perfect squares but just to give you idea... |
Ok, that explains it a little better.....Teeka is 7 1/4" tall and about 8 1/4 long, right now. I am assuming she will continue to grow some in length, height and weight! She is probably not going to be as small as the breeder thought! |

A good professional breeder that has used good line breeding techniques will have a general size that the pups are turning out as but even they can have some variations. When someone is advertising "teacups" and is promising tiny adult sizes you can count on the fact that they are scamming you either intentionally or they just know nothing about the breeding of purebred dogs. |
Teeka is already spoiled and I will love her no matter the size! I just wish some breeders were honest. I paid a lot of money for her and my expectations of a yorkie in the 3-4 pound range are going down hill! Live and Learn! |

I hope Teeka has many happy healthy years with you. |
Oh, she will! My husband was just telling me, this morning. how much Teeka is spoiled by me! We have a total of 5 dogs. Two are yorkies, 1 Cocker Spaniel, a American Esikmo and a Springer Spaniel. Only one of the 5, did we purchase. The others were left or given to us. I guess people know we have a soft heart for dogs! Thank you everyone for the info and input! :bravo: |

i know , that has already been clarified thank you |
I know that each of us are different in our wants/needs. For me, I will always gravitate to the larger Yorkie which at 7lbs max is not large in my eyes. I want solid bone structure, not straw type limbs. I don't want to have to worry that jumping on or off the occasional piece of furniture will break a bone. I want a doggie that can hike with the pack. Terriers including YT's truly should be rough n tumble kind of dogs; that was originally what they were bred for; ie hunting rats. |
My Willow is 7 1/2 inches tall and 9 inches long, she is almost 8 yrs old and weighs 4.82 pounds. My Allie is 8 1/2 inches tall and 10 1/2 inches long, she is 4 yrs old and weighs 8 pounds. My Luci is 6 1/4 inches tall and 7 inches long, she will be 5 yrs old next month and she weighs just a tad under 3 pounds. |
I'm going to measure Mandie again today. I'm curious about her height in front verses her height in back. She looks like she might be a tad taller in back but not sure... |
While there is no height restriction...the dog should be compact and square. This means their height would equal their length or very close. There are many while not compact...which are still square. |
Since joining YT in November, I have learned so much! I never new the measurements of height and length should match or be close. I find that very interesting! |
The love of our lives was not compact, square, or under 7 pounds. The most perfectly structured dog will never replace her either. |
I had to check Mandie on the front height v. back height just to see. She's a 1/4 inch higher in the back. Front = 9" Back = 9 1/4" |
