Scared of his own poop!?!? This is weird, but my puppy is scared of his own poop! I know he has never been fond of his poop. He would poop, turn around, smell it and leave. However, for the past few days it has progressed to being scared of his own poop. Few days ago, I put into his crate and I went to bed. As soon as I got into bed, I heard him yelp. I looked at his crate and sees him dashing from the bathroom to his crate. (Bathroom is lined with pee pads for him.) I ran over to see what scared him in the bathroom, and I saw poop. Then I hear him bark very softly at something in his crate. I looked, and it was a flat piece of poop that he probably stepped on and brought into the crate when he panicked. :eek: Since then, he would either... 1. Poop and run away as soon as he's done. When he turns around and see the poop, he'd yelp and run away again. 2. Turn around when he's done pooping. Sniffs the poop, yelps, and runs away. :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused: Is there's some phsychological/emotional cause for this behavior or something?!?! I am so puzzled... I guess, I don't have to worry about him eating his own poop though... |
LOL!!! I don't have an answer for you as to whether it's some sort of emotional or psychological issue, but it's funny and heck!!! He's not alone, don't worry. I've read several posts on here where yorkies poop and run really fast away from it. |
He's associating it with something bad like fear or pain, perhaps? Maybe pooping is painful to him somehow and he's associating the thing that he finds and smells right afterward with that pain. He's likely too young to have a history of somebody hitting or yelling at him every times he poops in the house, even at the breeder's home, so it could be from some pain he has. Maybe he gets gas right before or he's got swollen anals and pooping is painful before or during the act. |
It might be hurting him to poop I think I would call and ask the vet about it. Callie always runs away from her poo but never yelps. Yelping really sounds like it could be hurting him. |
They are right..if the yelping can definitely mean pain. I didn't read it that way by how you were describing it. But if it seems like he's in pain, definitely go to a vet. Sorry..didn't mean to make light of it. I read it as he was sort of barking at the poop itself. |

How old is he? If he's having pain while he's pooping, then yes a vet visit is in order. If he's done and then yelps while looking at the poop, that's a different story. Is he making hard or soft poops? Hard poops may be painful. You can add a few green beans to his food along with some extra water to soften/bulk them up making it more comfy coming out. If he seems to be fearful of his poop after the fact, just talk to him gently and reassuringly to calm his fears. Tell him 'It's okay, you're a Good Boy' and give him a treat when he poops on the pad. Never scold him for any accidents, just clean up and remain positive (no mumbling under your breath), just be silent. |
I'm guessing he may be under 12 weeks old? Reasoning may be that his biomom kept him very clean and he's never seen his own poop before...:confused: |
Thanks for all the responses!! I took him to the vet immediately. He's got a swollen anal like yorkietalkjilly suggested! :( He was treated. The vet also gave me antibiotics to feed him as well as an ointment to apply to the area. The ointment is supposed to make him feel better, so he won't scoot and irritate it more. Will be bringing him again in a week to get it re-checked. I hope he recovers in no time~ Now he fights when I have to give him his antibiotics. :animal-pa *sigh* Though I give him a small treat after he takes them... Quote:

Young to have an anal gland problem... maybe difference in food from the breeder to you (?)... green beans will add fiber to his diet which can help prevent anal gland issues. Hope he's feeling better soon.. |

I'm happy to see you got him to the vet and he's getting treated. Are the antibiotics in pill/capsule form? If so, you could mold a tiny bit of cream cheese around it. That's what I had to do for Mandie. Then, immediately have a tiny piece of the cheese ready to go right behind it so she doesn't try chewing on the first. I agree with adding fiber. The first time Mandie was constipated, it hurt her so bad..I didn't want that to happen again. So, I've always given her 1 carrot stick a day. I also give her green beans sometimes. She loves both and thinks they are treats. |
Poor little fellow. I am glad you took him to the Vet promptly. These little guys can go from bad to worse really quick. I feed a good kibble and add boiled lean meat and veggies. My dogs have veggies every day. I boil or bake yams/ sweet potatoes so they are still firm, a small slice like a french fry size, is a good treat, also baby carrots and washed raw or lightly steamed green beans. My Yorkies love raw squash and broccoli too. This fall I baked pumpkin in slices and froze it they enjoy that and apple slices too. Be careful of apple seeds the are poison. NEVER feed grapes or raisins they can cause serious problems and even death. |
Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. He seems to have lost his fear of his poop... But he also got so interested that he took a bite of it before I got to it... *bangs head on wall* :( And he got hard stool today... I'm going to try giving him vegetables suggested above. I really like the one carrot stick a day idea. Green beans also sounds easy enough to prepare. I also hope I would be able to substitute them for treats. They sound much healthier.:thumbup: Quote:
